Because the floodwaters around my home on the Kentucky River receded before the current subfreezing temperatures could thaw this week’s snow and ice, wherever the waters had covered the roots and trunks of trees, they left behind eerie, beautiful rings— like giant ice mushroom caps.

5 days after evacuating from my river house due to rapidly rising floodwaters, I now am able to return home. Approximately 2/3 of my backyard remains underwater, but my house is not. I’m grateful for all of the support that I received during my brief stint as a (very privileged) climate refugee.
