Another factor is coal mining, which has contributed to flooding by compacting soil, deforestation, and leaving behind abandoned mines. Toxic chemicals and heavy metals left behind from mining are incorporated into the trash and debris that are carried along by floodwaters.

Appalachian soil is moist and thin by nature, given that much of the region is characterized as temperate rainforest. Climate change is bringing more rain and snow than this soil can absorb quickly. This leads to more frequent, substantial, and devastating flooding.

@kevinmurphylaw.bsky.social I took a look from the opposite shore this afternoon and so far, the river has not entered my house, although the bluff on which it sits has been halved and turned into a peninsula. If the river doesn’t rise by more than 3-4 more feet, it just might remain unscathed.
