I know for my part, I distrust algorithms but also have to admit I feel odd following random people and do use discover a lot. Can buy people who weren't on young twitter (like myself) never getting over that hump and defaulting to algorithms.

Guess it comes down to if build-up is flavour that you can imagine, or if it's necessary for you to engage. Like, while ME and DA characaters can be just a few scenes, all their banter is written knowing roughly where in their arc the player is, and few change as drastically as, say, Shadowheart

I think there's middle-ground? Like, BG3, depending on your choices, you can have Lae'zel go from fiercely loyal to Vlaakith to swearing eternal emnity in one act 3 scene total. Bioware titles will usually slow down those scenes/allow for proper build-up (and some BG3 routes do but not all *can*)

I don’t think any approach can be better or worse, just a matter of different intentions/audiences. Absolute freedom and customisation works in some games, focused build-up and development works in others. Sometimes the interactivity of a game works best to just flesh out a focused world

Makes sense tbh. BG3 characters are, like, three scenes of content and a lot of implication - inevitable consequence of the sheer amount of choice the game gives. The trade off for limiting choice is more focused characters/arcs being possible in Veilguard.
Different approaches etc

Ah yes, the three kinds of joy. Joy, sadness and sadness

Honestly she played 'jaded checked out character' well which seems to be what she was directed to do.
I feel like one person on the committee was trying their hardest, there were glimmers of something interesting, but the rest was committed to being as generic as humanly possible

Phrased as vaguely as humanly possible.

My favourite parts of Trek are so often when things get given weight and grandeur, when they could so easily be handwaved procedure. There's definitely a lot to like about TMP
