travelling doesn’t change who you are, but it can make you think about things in different ways or deepen how you feel about the world or develop new hobbies, and if you travel long enough suddenly you’re a person who gushes about nature on multi-day hikes anyways the routeburn trail is spectacular

what an extraordinary feeling to say you will visit 52 countries in one year and then to do it anyways i made it to new zealand

Programming note: If you live on Vancouver Island, I’ll be doing a slideshow and Q&A about my year travelling the world on April 2nd at the Victoria Curling Club. The two Vancouver shows sold out quickly, so grab a ticket early if you’re interested! www.eventbrite.com/e/justin-mce...

i met up with a stranger from vancouver and we joked about how locals don’t go to the capilano suspension bridge because lynn canyon provides 90% of the quality and accessibility at 0% of the cost and riffing about local minutiae again made me feel SO ALIVE anyways last day in australia was grand

how amazing is it to see almost every grand city in the world and be constantly awed by the different combinations of people and geography and architecture, how culture and art are celebrated, how people get around and enjoy their lives anyways melbourne is fantastic

fondly remembering when the most embarrassing new york times coverage of canada was “they’re calling it c-day” instead of “after we conquered those cute perky people which of our leaders would they vote for?”

there are 300 reasons to live trains, but one of them is it’s an excuse to be lazy, “sorry i’m not free, i’m going to spend 9 hours travelling moderately quickly across a country with only a window seat and my ipad to entertain me, have fun being an efficient human” anyways i made it to melbourne

I often think of the baseball player who said when the pandemic began “sports are like the reward of a functioning society”, and if the leader of one society keeps saying how another society shouldn’t exist then guess what the sports between them are gonna be less functional anyways sydney is good

I get that the players live in la la land but this is about real shit. Your feelings are hurt? Maybe take a moment to find out why Canadians are so mad. theprovince.com/sports/hocke...

you don’t have to be a deep politics knower to see that all the people who left or been booted out of “big tent” ABC are from one part of the tent

yesterday was on a train and staff said “there’s no power outlets since the train is 40 years old” and i SHOULD have said “i’ve been on 110 trains this year and that’s a terrible excuse, old trains can have outlets” but instead i nodded like a coward anyways brisbane’s koala reserve was amazing

happy nine year anniversary to the one time global let me on the main channel

as someone terrified by strangers, the greatest evolution in hostels has been the development of pods with sliding doors so you can relax in isolation instead of staring across a bunk bed to a hungover 24 year old european with questionable hair choices anyways i’m in australia now

Wrote about my first few weeks in Southeast Asia! Includes discussion of motorcycles dominating the road culture, of authentic vs. tourism travel, and other Serious and Important ideas. oh also i got high for the first time

Programming note: after a year travelling the world, I return home to Vancouver on March 11. And on March 12, I’ll be doing TWO LIVE SHOWS at the Wise Hall in East Vancouver. I’ll show photos and charts, answer your questions, and if you’ve enjoyed following my trip I hope you’re able to come.

emailed my favourite brunch place about a group reservation when i return to vancouver and i declined when they said the minimum spend per person is more than $50, the first of many reminders in the coming months about reality in the city i’m cursed to love anyways i’m finally out of bali’s rain

“Except for Vietnam and Iraq, but right now we’re downplaying that for obvious reasons.”

remember when we thought the biggest possible massacre in this game would be kendrick doing not like us

yesterday i said there are no wasted days when travelling the world, and then the world nearly capsized my 9am boat heading to bali, nearly crashed a tree on the bus i was on, and then had my slow ferry arrive in a monsoon at 1am the next day anyways kudos to the world for having a sense of humour

there are so many amazing things about travelling for a year but one is you can have a sunburn and then the rain and the wind comes and the power goes out and instead of going “what a wasted day” you can be like “eh, the world is vast, let’s see what tomorrow brings ” anyways gili air is good

in vancouver we call this “a heritage laneway house with plenty of potential, two thousand a month please”

swimming with fishies is amazing because if you tried following any other animal you would go too fast or slow or you’d be like “this is weird” or they’d eat you but with fish you can be like “maybe i could be a fish too” and it only sounds slightly crazy in the moment anyways gili air is great

somehow i didn’t make the vancouver magazine power 50 list DESPITE: - some good tiktoks about small town dysfunction - ranked decorative arts museums around the world - explained to teenagers in india metro vancouver is a regional patchwork of 21 municipalities - making fun of burnaby ROBBED

yesterday i stumbled upon a restaurant that proudly advertised poutine and i was ready to eat for my country but they were out of cheese curds but said they could do it with cheddar or mozzarella and i said “that’s not poutine!” and they argued it was and i’m sorry but no anyways gili air is great

when i go home i don’t want to be that person whose entire personality becomes “I travelled”, but last night there was a thunderstorm and my first thought was “very cool but not as good as the one in the amazon”, and i’m gonna have to learn to keep my mouth shut anyways gili air is a great island
