I know saying “here’s some charts and comparisons” is less emotionally satisfying then going “FAT CAT TAKES TAXPAYER MONEY AND HERE’S SOMEONE ANGRY ABOUT IT”
but I think it shows the disconnect between how Metro Vancouver views itself (a quasi-crown corporation) and the public (a political body)

People: wait, swartz bay? nobody has heard of that
Planners: it's the body of water where the ferries dock
People: okay, and in vancouver?
Planners: they will be named "horseshoe bay", which is also a body of water
People: i get it!
Planners: and "tsawwassen"
People: which...
Planners: is not

People: why do the terminals need different names? won't that confuse people?
Planners: the terminals aren't in the centre of the cities. for example, the victoria one is in a place called "north saanich"
People: so will that be the "north saanich terminal"?
Planner: no. it's called "swartz bay."

interesting debate: Harcourt suggested a financial fix could be mixed-use housing on Granville Island of up to 10 storeys and got booed, but then councillor Rebecca Bligh said “well the feds really want to invest on land they own but also want something out of it,” so that’s a thread to watch

the panel discussion stopped because lancaster was like “oh justin’s here, let’s talk about he’s great and how he likes granville island,” so i yelled out “talk about the tunnelling otters!” and he confirmed the terror otters are real
anyways living in my own truman show is always terrifying

Tom Lancaster, the Granville Island Manager, says “nobody wants to hear what keeps me up at night, like otters that are tunnelling under the island and causing sinkholes”
wait hold on a second because that sounds both dope and terrifying

“Mike Harcourt, could you talk about how Granville Island started?”
Harcourt: “Actually, I’m gonna tell a rambling 10-minute story about Vancouver’s development over a 50 year period and how we stopped the freeway”
(this is not a complaint because old premiers and mayors should do more of this)

Here's a chart showing the yearly rolling average of monthly home sales across Greater Vancouver this century.
In the past, any time it got around 2,000 units sold a month, the market quickly surged up.
But the last 2-3 years, it's been different.

In the years ahead, the province, school board and the city will be part of ribbon cutting events for the final design, rezoning, groundbreaking and completion.
They will congratulate themselves for what they've done.
Politicians will applaud at each other.
23 years for 1 school.
