When we negotiate fair terms for ourselves, we negotiate fair terms for all translators. Be wary of work-for-hire, and of working with editors/authors/agents who don't believe translators are part of a book's success.

Moderator: You’re a socialist. Will Trump target you?
Zohran Mamdani: Trump will target anyone. He’s targeted his collaborator, Mayor Eric Adams. I am Donald Trump’s worst nightmare. I am a progressive, immigrant, Muslim who believes in what I say.

Translation is always political, and one way to fight against genocide is to ensure a long life for those voices and ideas that otherwise would die unheard. To translate Karim Kattan's words is a political act, yes—but it is also an act of love, and an act of hope. 🖤🤍💚❤️

Oh, and I'm reminded of one of the most effective games about translation choices that I've ever seen. (You can play it in five minutes. Or play with it for an hour.) I like to pair it with Emily Wilson's intro to her translation of the Odyssey.

Thank you, this is a wonderful observation that makes me want to get back to the Earthsea books, at least the first two! And now I can see what The Tombs of Atuan so much more than a mere sequel here.
