Those who know me know I was highly critical of what I saw as some of the rhetorical excesses of the campus protests. Khalil and I wld probably get into a spat immediately. It's all the more important for people who believe as I do to say clearly, the protections of the law are for everyone.

If you’re a Dem elected and you’re not mentioning the massive cuts to cancer cure and social security funding in every public appearance you’re just not doing your job.

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

This is all a good reminder that, “no help, no votes until the criminal conduct stops” is neither a big ask nor a politically perilous one.

This whole effort was brazenly illegal. From the big picture down to innumerable individual acts. But even if course was shifted now, which is basically unimaginable, Musk likely has already essentially destroyed the organization. Under the best circs will take years or decades to rebuild.

Update 2/2: Dept of Justice memo directs all agencies to comply with Friday's federal Court injunction prohibiting any arbitrary suspension of federal grants & assistance due to OMB memo or Trump's Executive Orders! Effective Monday 9am. Applies to all programs! Hat tip @benjaminwittes.bsky.social

Arguably the biggest national security breach in U.S. history. Private employees downloading personnel data on every federal employee and tax and social security data on every American onto private unsecured servers. Needless to say, completely illegal and subject to major prison sentences.

I don't know if people who haven't worked in the public sector are aware that the category "things substantially funded by federal grant money" includes more or less everything

My amazing LA created this form so folks can share their stories easily docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Relatedly, if you are impacted by this sudden government shut down please share your story with me. Minnesotans are most relevant (cuz state lawmaker 👋🏽) but all stories are important.

GOP needs Dem votes on an omnibus or CR but you can’t possibly vote for anything under these circumstances

WIC. They are pausing WIC. That's the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Last time I checked (a while ago), every dollar spent on WIC produced over a dollar in savings *in the same fiscal year.* For most people, though, feeding infants and mothers is enough.

Those of us who understand the breadth and depth of damage this is going to cause our entire country better be on the PHONES to their congresspeople first thing Tuesday morning. Those who don't yet understand are gonna learn a lot here real quick.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

@angiecraigmn.bsky.social this looks like it will put thousands of your constituents, including me out of work.

Buried in the flurry of Executive Orders last night is one that halts all funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Yes, the law that Republicans and Democrats came together to pass that fixes our roads, modernizes old bridges and makes drinking water safer.

Trump hits the ground running trying to keep the costs of drugs high for consumers. Literally.

something that is particularly galling about this is that Democrats have had a front row seat to one of the most effective tactics in political history: Mitch McConnell's successful effort to hurt Dems by refusing them cooperation on anything at all and somehow they don't want to replicate it
