Those who know me know I was highly critical of what I saw as some of the rhetorical excesses of the campus protests. Khalil and I wld probably get into a spat immediately. It's all the more important for people who believe as I do to say clearly, the protections of the law are for everyone.

A federal judge in NY has blocked any effort by the Trump administration to deport Mahmoud Khalil – whose arrest and imminent deportation Trump celebrated on Turth Social today — until further proceedings play out. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

That's why I voted against them instead of voting for Stein or Uncommitted.
That doesn't mean we have to stoop down to find our American ideals.
I say this knowing that many of these commenters are the first to accuse others of genocide.

What I saw were disingenuous Far-Right claims of equating statements made by nutballs off campus to what was being said on campus. Yes with occasional bad actors on campus.
Which to me was a shameful moment for those who tried and gave all Moderates a bad name in the process.
Only when the law is followed are our rights protected. In this case, as in so many these past 6 weeks, breaking the law seems to be the point.
Trump is trying to prove there are zero limits on his power.
In the UK we have a king. Nice chap. Doesn't lie (well, not habitually anyway) and doesn't try to deport people for being inconvenient.
Remember Gulf of America?
The next thing he renames will be the United States of Trumpistan.
Back in the late early 1980's he saved Spanish democracy by standing up to a military coup that wanted to re-instate fascism.
Come to think of it, it sounds like you could actually do with that sort of king.
But what Mahmoud Khalil was evidently seized for was expressing views on a conflict in another country.
Based on what we know now, Khalil should be released at once, and sternly cautioned not to attempt travel to Israel.

The constitutional due process question of the "foreign policy exception" (8 USC 1182(a)(3)(C) has not been litigated to a decision yet.
He was seized by plain clothes officers. No warrant has been shown.
None of this makes the DOJ look good. It is illegal.

My main issues, if I can call them that, why did they not see this coming? And where are all the “leaders” who pushed the protesters?
All I’m seeing is people blaming Biden, AGAIN.
When you can't defend.... deflect and blame Biden.
I am an American Jew, spent 7+ months in Israel, tons of friends there, speak Hebrew, and strongly support Israel's existence as a Jewish state.
I vehemently disagree with Khalil. I'm alarmed and outraged by his detention. Not in my name. https://bsky.app/profile/moxfyre.bsky.social/post/3lk2mosqu222a
Principle means the same rules apply to everyone -- even people saying things I disagree with, and even things I think are hateful towards me.
Reflecting on it a bit… my opposition to detaining and terrifying immigrants for political gain is my most unshakable and foundational political belief.
Her most haunting story was of hiding in a barn in Norway w/her mom. She heard approaching bells and thought it must be the Nazis. Turned out to be the cows coming home.
Agreed!
They used the Gestapo to disappear him BECAUSE they don’t have any legal justification for this.
Agree or disagree with his politics, Khalil must be released.
I heard it was just a threat, but hey…. How would he be treated for the same offenses under his home government?
Here, what ya get is #DueProcessForAll
Your finite energy could go to support those still being targeted by people like him
Or to the hundreds of deported Latino people this administration has disappeared
Instead you focus on this man
Interesting choice of what to invest time in
But it's still a free country for a few more weeks🤷🏾♀️

I'm Jewish and supported the peaceful protests which included Jewish groups.
I too don't like some of the rhetoric but understand how the horror in Gaza led to those extremes
This imprisonment & attempted deportation is a violation of the First Amendment
Chilling effect of the action
also maybe this is an opportunity to reflect on the knee-jerk reaction to the “rhetorical excesses” of the campus protests
just a thought
But this is straight-up fascism and the first step in a dark ladder into hell Trump is making the U.S. descend.
Speech that I too disagree with and that may have helped elect Trump. But, it is all the more important that his speech be protected. Trump is not going to stop there.

Tunnel vision on Palestine blinds the leadership of ADL on the downsides of this plan
Everyone should write their Rep, their Senators, and maybe their Governor and state Attorney General, cover all the bases.
