This is not entirely accurate. In comics publishing, advances (eg the costs of art, lettering, etc—expressed as page rates in comics pubz and a lump sum in Big Five trad pubs) is a sliding scale of how many books they think you’ll sell, who owns the IP, and if you want to retain secondary rights 🧵

Thanks to the Co-Op's yearly survey, i was able to prove to the government that I can make as low as $6 an hour and that's why they should give me 100% financial aid. So many cartoonists are on public assistance of some kind, but it's hard to prove our weird job to the financial aid folks.
