just one example from David DeWitt: “DeWine said he would fully fund Ohio’s Fair School Funding Plan, but . . . DeWine’s budget actually has a $103.4 million cut to public schools . . . also a $265.4 million bump for private school vouchers and charter schools. . .”

My favorite @inquirer.com columnist @willbunch.bsky.social giving a shout-out to my favorite independent journalist @marisakabas.bsky.social, yep that's the good stuff. Gift link share.inquirer.com/POSW6s

"In other countries, this would be called 'an authoritarian coup.' In America, mealy-mouthed officials call our transition into a mafia state 'deeply troubling' and do little to curb the damage." -- HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT (2020)

True, true, true - which is why there's currently no surprise and an overload of dismay among those who've read Sarah Kendzior's writing. (not sure I trust myself to just wave my copy. . .)

The problem with trying to convince people like Musk, Trump & the GOP that their decisions are harming &/or even many killing innocent people is to fail to understand that they don’t give a shit! They are all sociopaths The only thing they care about is power, $$$ & themselves Prove me wrong

Yesterday, #Ohio students held a "wake" for higher education They publicly named politicians who are trying to pass the Higher Education Destruction Act (SB 1) youtu.be/Dhkt2s2VU04?...

It’s wild seeing people starting to catch on what many of us in the academic and research side shave been writing and speaking about publicly for multiple years. It’s very good It’s too bad that it didn’t happen sooner but now everyone must accept the reality of what is going on.

It started in Silicon Valley as a fringe idea: an inefficient democracy needs to die - replaced by a "red Caesar" dictatorship that would fire federal employees and govern with the latest tech Thiel, Musk and Trump are making this dystopia a reality. My new column www.inquirer.com/columnists/a...

I'm reposting this. Now that my predictions have come true, folks may read these articles in a different light. Hopefully a clearer light. To fight the future, you need to grasp the past: sarahkendzior.substack.com/p/ten-articl...

Add to your understanding of how we arrived to this moment. This book, along with Sarah Kendzior's others, provides background knowledge that's dire, yet engagingly presented. Purchase now (what a bargain!) or check out a digital, print, or audio copy from your local library.

The “bad idea” that’s Ohio HB26

Good morning! This incredible NYT op-ed by @katherinestewart.bsky.social needs to be the very first thing that you read today. The next thing to do is send it to all your friends who still don't believe Trump is a crisis. This lays it all out (gift link) www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/o...

President Trump has vowed to ease environmental regulations on the utility industry. Now companies that own coal-burning plants in Ohio are asking the new administration to excuse them from cleaning up acres of toxic waste that is soaked in groundwater

I wrote about going down to the USAID building yesterday in the District to see what elected officials would do, to talk to workers shut out of their offices, and to figure out what it all means for how we might turn this tsunami and send it back out to sea.

I wish we could bring back Abbie Hoffman to levitate the Treasury

If you voted Republican, and you care about your country, please act rather than rationalize. Unless you cast your ballot so that South African oligarchs could steal your data, money, country, and future, tell your elected officials that you wanted something else. snyder.substack.com/p/the-logic-...

1971: "The revolution will not be televised" 2025: The coup is not being televised

Sometimes self-government just means elections. And sometimes it means recognizing the deeper dignity and meaning of what it means to be a people. That means speaking up, standing out, and protesting. We can only be free together. snyder.substack.com/p/the-logic-...

Like … is not one democratic lawmaker willing to go enter a building and demand illegal activity stop? Even if they get arrested? Especially if they get arrested?

"I don’t know how much more of a favor you can do for someone than tell the future in advance, other than forgive them when they don’t believe you." sarahkendzior.substack.com/p/the-conflu...

Dems can: -oppose all Trump nominees until this EO is withdrawn -deny unanimous consent to slow senate proceedings -vote no on all cloture -force quorum calls at every chance It’s a constitutional crisis. There is absolutely no reason the Senate should be connecting business as usual.

"Do not accept brutality and cruelty as normal even if it is sanctioned. Protect the vulnerable and encourage the afraid. If you are brave, stand up for others. If you cannot be brave – and it is often hard to be brave – be kind." Sarah Kendzior

Advice that bears rereading/repeating - thanks for the reminder!

YOU ALREADY HAVE NUTMEG CHECK AGAIN

I'm just going to (re)post this whenever I need to remind myself. Maybe it'll help you too? 1. Focus on things in your control & take ONE action there. 2. Limit your inputs. You can't help if you're paralyzed.

Commentary: U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno and Vice President JD Vance shame Ohio by defending Trump's pardons for violent criminals who beat police officers while storming the United States Congress to try to overturn a free and fair election on Jan. 6

Hi that was a coup last night in case no one mentioned that to you. The executive branch seized the power of the purse the Constitution gave to Congress, which is a pretty authoritarian / illegal consolidation of powers move. Time to go yell at your reps, the media, etc.

Democrats in Congress: WHAT IS THE PLAN? Going on Sunday shows and spewing consultant speak isn't going to cut it. Twelve inspectors general fired and there's no sit-in? No filibuster? No direction to voters? And in fact, some of you are actually voting for Trump's agenda?

A reminder to support - and protect - your local library.

"One of the most horrific realizations when your government is hijacked from the inside is that there is no official to whom you can turn. Living for legacy, living for security, living for money -- it makes no difference, they are not living for you." -- HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT (2020)

Excellent advice - stop by your library today!

New Editor Commentary: America’s love affair with confident stupidity continues to reach awful new heights. In Ohio and nationally, it's putting education, science, and medical research under threat. The bill will come due. The piper will need paid, and it won't be pretty.
