Funded PhD opportunity at Lancaster: 'The sharing of personal lived experience by peer support workers working in mental health services in NHS, social care and third sector organisations.' Open to applicants with a background in Linguistics as well as Psychology www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

A systemic disaster. In a world of machine-generated fakes and hallucinations, small group instruction and robust assessment *are* what universities can offer. But instead of more teachers and unseen exams we’re going to get a pointless ‘AI’ arms race. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Thanks for this, @psychmag.bsky.social! Looking forward to reading it

“Scholars born into an autocracy are not able to fight for the academic freedom to pursue what they do not know about.”

I recently took a CPD course on #Decolonizing #Education: Approaches, Frameworks and Next Steps. A few self-reflections: 1. Depending on your role there are varying levels of control and influence one has.

Did you know that changes in Canada’s political landscape could affect how our natural spaces are protected? I’m hosting a medical humanities free workshop on zoom - please register via: us06web.zoom.us/meeting/regi...

I'm really looking forward to giving this talk next week! I've been working on this for a while (some version of this has been in my head for years) and am excited to finally get my ideas out there. You can attend for free in person or online!

That's me on page 2!

I'm looking forward to presenting at this to share about my PhD. I use #PositiveDiscourseAnalysis for a qualitative analysis of #trauma from UK political speeches, US news, and social media.

#Ecolinguistics and #cognitivelinguistics followers: does anyone know of any Greek-speaking researchers working on or interested in (non-literary) language, cognition and the environment? I’d be grateful if you could point them in my direction for a potential funding/project opportunity.

Want to do a PhD in climate, with a focus on using machine learning to recover millions of lost weather observations and so better reconstruct climatic changes over the past century? Open to students from UK and Ireland, funded through @climatecocentre.bsky.social. www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

With everything that is changing currently in the US, it's spurred the need to take advantage of as much learning as I can, totalling 21 hours, from February -April, 2025. What are you doing with your access to information?

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

A useful read. Academics - we have a lot of skills to offer in organising against fascism. Last night I used my skills as a teacher to educate new door knockers on how to talk to people in low conflict ways. I felt useful. And I felt better about stuff www.404media.co/you-cant-pos...

It's like a modern day Fahrenheit 451 out there. What can you do? - Regarding sexual violence and harassment in the workplace: ❓What is the posted policy (website, new joiners manual, etc.) ❓Who is the point of contact to report sexual violence and harassment ❓Who is your trusted contact

It's like a modern day Fahrenheit 451 out there. What can you do? Those of us with access to information, learning, and services need share knowledge. Especially for current students who don't know what services are available or steps that are possible to take (from an education perspective).

1/2 What an oddity in 2025 to be saying that I have the privilege of being able to attend events and sessions that I had come to regard as common place and expected. Thank you @ucu.org.uk for the CPD Challenging Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence. I'm looking forward to further sessions

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Busy week talking about my Social Media and Body Image project with @helenringrow.bsky.social and Charlotte Boyce in Portsmouth. We're launching a toolkit for mentors in The Girls' Network to use with young women all around the country.

Never ask a linguist "Is that a word?" because you will always get the same response, "IT IS NOW!" 😃 delivered with some variation of jazz hands like you just won a very low stakes game show and I'm so sorry it's just part of the training it's not something we can control.

The entire archive of CDC datasets can be found here. HUGE shoutout to data archivists- this work is important 👏🙌🏻 archive.org/details/2025...

The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Day 2 of the holiday and I’m already squirrelly from taking a PhD break

Gearing up for Lunar New Year which is unusually long and snowy this year.
