Agreed. I feel like I was sold a false bill of goods as a child in the 80s and 90s. They told me we were over all the racism of the 50’s and I believed it because nobody I grew up with was a hateful person. Now I know better.

You know, I’ve followed politics closely since the 90’s. It has always been the case that Republicans keep moving to the extreme, and Democrats keep compromising, driving the entire country rightward over time. Democrats are the truer party of working people, but propaganda and power…

This is true. A good friend of mine has been a lobbyist for years. Your reps don’t know what you think unless you tell them. They usually hear mostly from the cranks.

Also, that personal responsibility is only part of the story. You are affected by forces much larger than yourself. Understanding those forces is crucial. Living in another culture for a year is probably best education one can get.

At 56, I’ve realized that you can hold conflicting truths in one hand. I wish I’d had that perspective when I was young and full of fire.
