Trump really thought that berating of Zelensky would go down like the final scene of an episode of The Apprentice. I'm surprised they didn't have a "dum-dum-dum!" sound effects board off to the side.

"You don't have the cards right now." "I'm not playing cards."

Look, I know I'm a progressive so maybe I have a blind spot here, but one of the most consistent patterns in American politics of my lifetime is a GOP president running the country into a ditch, then a Dem spending all their capital picking up the pieces, and the cycle continues...

John Wilson + Frederick Wiseman. Doesn't get better than this! www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDuh...

Tesla lost enough value today that it could have fully funded USAID for a year.

The Clown Paradox: the more negative the online review of a clown is, the funnier the clown sounds

Brave, important piece here from @peterbakernyt.bsky.social. If he's sending a warning like this, it means the light is flashing red.

Well well well... it was bound to happen! Here's this week's edition of "Can Jody Guess The Title Of The New Yorker Cover" youtube.com/shorts/kG2Ab...

Thanks to everyone who came out to On Air Fest! Two new shows on last week's wrap-up SubwayTakes: episodes.fm/1796755509 Summer Album/Winter Album with @jodyavirgan.com & Craig Finn: episodes.fm/1795533637

Seems like a good time to tap the sign once again: would strongly recommend supporting non-billionaire owned news media - especially the independent, local, worker-run and/or reader funded variety

A genuine tragedy. It's no exaggeration to say that John and Caryn have made NYC a richer place over the years. And it breaks my heart that my beloved WNYC can't seem to chart a path forward.

Incidentally, for someone who is so obsessed with, and genuinely a savant, when it comes to optics... this thing Trump is doing lately of sitting at a desk blankly staring into the distance while someone stands and talks next to him -- it looks weak as fuck.

I've long thought that "The Lonesome Crowded West" was totally prescient about where interenet-driven isolation would lead society. So glad I got a chance to talk about it with Kevin Morby and Craig Finn youtube.com/shorts/0citB...

Just rode a Citibike for the first time in 2025. The seal is broken. Spring is sprung. There’s no way we’re turning back.

Hey, it's only been a month, I know you have to think long term, but so far: this Trump guy's been pretty bad for my retirement account!

I talked to @techcrunch.com about my podcast setup. And I finally confess to stealing a mic from the Disney corporation. techcrunch.com/2025/02/22/h...

So glad someone asked this basic question. Reminds me of a legendary @therealazi.bsky.social moment where he asked Bloomberg why he 1) said he needed to run for a third term because the economy had collapsed 2) was also touting that he’d brought the city back.

Like a lot of people, I’ve been thinking a ton about my relationship to tech, social, and algorithms. A few thoughts on what’s helped change my thinking and my behavior (aka addiction). But first, I will say that I think the overall conversation has genuinely shifted.

When the iTunes store was fairly new I bought “blue light in the basement” on a whim and it changed a few things about how I think about songwriting. She was truly one of the greats. Travel safely home Roberta Flack

I hadn’t really thought about why there’s an egg shortage but not a chicken shortage. Good explainer here from @planetmoney.bsky.social, featured in today’s @harkaudio.com daily (which, look at that, I host) share.harkaudio.com/fZSP7FKW2284...

Does the email address where DOGE is trying to collect progress reports work for people without a dot gov email? Is it being flooded with mundane updates from regular folks about what they ate or watched and stuff?

Brilliant protest. Yosemite National Park workers hung an upside-down American flag — traditionally a symbol of distress or a national threat — thousands of feet off the ground on the side of El Capitan.

Last weekend we said it was worth keeping an eye on the town halls -- seems like there's indeed a lot of pushback going on.

I launched a new show yesterday: a musical debate/conversation show called "Summer Album / Winter Album." Here's an excerpt of my conversation with Craig Finn (Hold Steady) and Kevin Morby about the genius of Modest Mouse. Full episode is out wherever you get podcasts! youtu.be/cGeIYPtwaMg

We're pleased to announce 'Summer Album/Winter Album,' a new musical debate podcast from Craig Finn and @jodyavirgan.com. Episode one, 'The Lonesome Crowded West' with Kevin Morby, is out now: episodes.fm/1795533637

Others have made this observation, but it's kinda stunning how much Congressional Republicans have receded from the picture. The entire political conversation is being played out by Trump, Musk, courts, and even Dems. You'd think that even on an ego-level, GOP electeds would want to get in the mix.

This is what happens when you go into a bodega with a seven year old and say “you can get one drink and one snack.” What a combo!

These photos recalling the pro-Union rally held in the same square in 1861 after secessionist Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumpter.

In the coming weeks, a lot of slow-on-the uptake folks are going to begin belatedly realizing Trump is both an inept moron and a dangerous autocrat. Our great civic challenge in these trying times will be calmly welcoming them aboard instead of primal-screaming in their faces.
