Dearest Pru, I write you from the most tumultuous of fronts. The battle rages on for our sacred right to revelry. The enemy, dour and severe, seeks to end merriment, but we stand firm! I long for the day when this war is won, when we may dance freely upon our own porch. Yours in mirth, Jedediah

Such a debate would never happen, would be easily politicized by so many who seem to have lost their ability to have a reasonable national conversation about pretty much everything -- who would rather slash and burn regardless of who it hurts.

Is the federal government "bloated"? Conservatives certainly would say so. But in a nation of >330 million, with a complex economy and complex public needs, one could also argue that a larger federal workforce could help ensure more responsive and efficient delivery of essential public services.

That 3 million number is the same as it was in 1985. Increasing efficiency partly explains the lack of growth in the size of the federal workforce, as well as decadeslong shifts toward using contractors for jobs federal employees used to do.

The same holds true for fans. I can recall a play-by-play recount of Dallas’ loss to Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XIII – 45 years later – but remember nothing about their win over Denver just a year earlier in Super Bowl XII. The thrill of victory is fleeting; the agony of defeat is forever.
