Mozilla is in a tough spot. Firefox is in decline and with that its primary source of revenue from the Google. They plan to invest in privacy-respecting ads for near-term revenue, open-source AI for mid-term relevance, and online fundraising for long-term growth. Hard to imagine major success here

Anyway, this is DIY house show day apparently. I've restored a blog post from 2010 announcing the launch of my backyard gig series, The Gate: joe.hardy.id.au/introducing-...

Oh wow, I just discovered that the @waybackmachine.bsky.social has beautifully preserved the old website for my DIY live music project, The Gate! See it here: web.archive.org/web/20110202...

In Redfern tonight, we're hosting killer 3 piece Monstahouse at The Dock. Furious, direct, heartfelt songwriting, awesome band. The Dock is a wonderful space, and we get to showcase all our favourite locals there every Sunday night. Such a privilege. If you're in the area, drop by! Always free.

If you're still feeling like "wait why is everyone mad at Spotify?" and you enjoy listening to podcasts, you would do very well to listen to @lizpelly.bsky.social being interviewed on @techwontsave.us Liz also has an incredible article on "ghost artists" on Spotify: harpers.org/archive/2025...

The fact that this entire write-up is centred around Apple's new AI-generated mood playlists is really depressing. So many people are going to just use these.

Just got to talk up the merits of backyard gigs on ABC Radio Sydney. Immediate text line question: "what about noise complaints?" Well what about them? You're free to complain about them, just like we're free to do them. Normalise music existing in neighbourhood communities!

SO excited about the new editorial we have coming up, and this is a great way to kick it off: encouraging people to buy a great local release. Some really thoughtful words from some of Sydney's finest record stores including Prop Records, Resist Records, Crosstalk, Red Eye and a whole bunch more!

say WHAT

Top 20 Podcasts on Apple and Spotify in the Australian market, with Australian titles highlighted. 40% Australian on each but super different lists. (Haven't looked at podcasts in forever, sorry if this is redundant and obvious)

The LIFE that this house show footage from a backyard in Doonside in 2017 gives me

Just running this piece one more time for anyone that might have missed it. It's a transcript of an interview I did on FBi Radio. Shortly after the interview I also discovered that 2025 was the smallest lineup ever for the fest; also the lowest number of Australian artists - so I added that in.

WOW. Vinyl Group Ltd, owners of Brag Media, have just been sued by Brag's former owner Luke Girgis seeking payment of a $2mil performance payment. Vinyl responds that "Mr Girgis was terminated for serious misconduct, including but not limited to financial misconduct"

🥴

Why are we doing this? You can't plan long-term using short-term movements. This is psychotic. Whipping up the market?

lol fuck, these absolute swindlers

"US trade officials also opposed moves to force streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ and HBO to produce Australian made television and movies, a plan the Albanese government shelved in November." Did not know that quotas for local content on streamers quietly got the axe end of last year.

This profile/interview with Bayang (tha Bushranger) is so fucking good. Great to see this kind of writing from FBi.

Today I introduced the children to Neu!

Wettest 100 countdown is today! "An alternative fan-voted top 100 countdown celebrating left field Australian music." Tune in here: www.wettest100.au

“Congress is freaking out ... the nuclear deterrent is the backbone of American security and stability – period. For there to be any even very small holes poked even in the maintenance of that deterrent should be extremely frightening to people.” It boggles the mind.

Even worse incompetence: they accidentally fired, then apparently today un-fired, hundreds of the people who manage America's nuclear weapons.

Imagine if Twitter just had the "it's not for sale" conversation instead of cashing out?

How far are they actually going to get with this?

Incompetence in Washington puts every American at risk, no matter how you voted. No one should be happy that the DOGE team - the same folks who randomly published classified U.S. security information online today - wants access to your bank account & Social Security numbers.

More ridiculously hyperlocal self-promotion ... I'm DJing with @caitlinwelsh.bsky.social tonight at The Vanguard, which has a newly extended license and is now open until 2:30am Fridays and Saturdays. We're playing from 9:30pm, entry is totally free, and we've got a fun set shaping up.

ICYMI: I've created a new Bluesky list for everything about #ausmusic! Featuring Australian musicians, music writers, industry folks, media, and anyone contributing significantly to the conversation. Let me know if you have any suggestions for accounts that should be on here!
