We are experiencing an assault on science unparalleled by anything I’ve seen in my life. It’s not one issue or another anymore, the entire institution is under attack by the most powerful individuals in the country. This Friday, where will you be? standupforscience2025.org

Super excited that this amazing book is finally available for preorder. It was written by over 50 Indigenous Peoples from around the world and contains stories, poetry, and critical thought pieces on how TEK is used and extracted from our communities and what folks are doing to protect it.

Just out! A bilingual collection (go @culanth!) of short essays on the changing nature of facts, thinking from Latin America. Curated by @krether.bsky.social, @aballes2.bsky.social & @edenmedina.bsky.social medina. [1/2]

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

I escaped poverty because I am a scientist. And I am a scientist because of the National Science Foundation. A 🧵:

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

The new executive orders slashing funding & programs for social justice and env’tl protection paint a bleak picture for the future of climate justice (CJ). But liberal political theory–the basis of the mainstream CJ movement–was always going to fall short even without these cuts tinyurl.com/2ju5k82x

Most of us trust scientists, shows a survey of nearly 72,000 people worldwide theconversation.com/most-of-us-t...

Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

The University of Minnesota crunched the numbers. They estimate that if NIH indirects are cut to 15%, our university will lose $100 million to $130 million per year. If the same rate cut is expanded to all federal agencies, we will lose $155 million to $188 million per year.

Listen, things are fucked, but that doesn’t mean your accomplishments don’t matter. Wrote a book? Got accepted to a program? Recorded a song? One year sober? Whatever it is, share it. Maybe your joy will bring someone else a bit of joy, and we all need that.

getting the band back together, because, well... 🤯

I'm going to be ending my Twitter presence soon, so this will be my only social media account.

This is an existential moment for federal scientists and other public servants as they face pressures to resign. We must do everything we can to safeguard the federal science enterprise. Thoughts and recommendations from me out in @nature.com today: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Hard to believe that we are here, & in such short order. The fragility of vital agencies & programs is startling, or perhaps their resilience to political interference has never been tested in this way. Necessary read for anyone based in the US conducting research supported by the NSF 👇
