Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut.
This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

after America is gone i think we gotta be really careful with our next constitution
the people need like a button that ejects the government into space or something
"That was it. That was the moment when America got irreversibly fucked. And we didn't do a thing."
This, and the whole movie "Idiocracy". They both were premonitory movies... sadly...

It's likely bad math, it's bad policy, & of course terrible for governance but it works for them.
Your oppression is their profession
This isn’t an attack on science as much as it is an attack on Americans—the scientists whose lives are being turned inside out and the people they protect.
I’m so sorry
CHILDREN
Meantime, I don’t know a single liberal who takes pleasure from causing harm let alone deaths
My time as PTA pres was v informative vis a vis the disconnect in the minds of ppl who simultaneously claim to love their kids while being “concerned” abt public ed, & opposed to liberal politics
That's it right there, Dr. Gill.
When NSF & NIH research grant money dry up, only few top labs get funding, so most programs can’t support PhD candidates. Then people figure out it’s not worth getting a PhD b/c impossible to get funded so study something else. Lose an entire generation of scientists.
Transformers paper for LLMs written by Google researchers, but built upon prior NSF supported academic research.
“Word embedding” for deep learning & NLP- NSF funded
Deep learning- neural networks, back propagation: NSF & DARPA.
Public datasets to train models- NSF
Cutting it is ending American innovation.
People think that ALL innovation comes for Silicon Valley, NO.
Fundamental breakthrough innovation in basic science occurs at universities funded by NSF grants.
Not just for a foreign source, although they are certainly benefitting, but the tax cuts, contracts, privatized data, & destruction of regulations, etc are for the primary benefit of the billionaire class.

NSF is about 0.16% of total Federal spending, just for perspective. It's a wild bargain with vast ROI.
Usually we don't talk about the "entitlement" part or debt service, but it seems like those are even on the table now.
so we were warned...what's that ...Asteroids not assholes?
Well maybe it was Bernie Sanders warned us about the assholes.

They are committed to serving the public (PUBLIC SERVICE), often sacrificing other things (potential to earn more money, time with family,...) to do so.
The good news? Huge public pushback works to a certain degree
The bad news? Our current political leader isn't the one pushing these policies, and yet...
Period
Musk is starving the broad economy of dollars
Scientists however? Getting rid of them is a double win in their view:
1) Can claim they're cutting costs!
2) No pesky scientists challenging their narrative with silly things like facts and evidence.
Because the funding to counter their 'research' is not there it drowns out real science.
