Seems pretty clear that doge is a total scam

The Trump administration has canceled a Biden-era agreement requiring the state of Alabama to clean up raw sewage in poor, Black, rural communities where filthy toilet water has been flowing directly into the yards of homes where children play.

Great post, @mtkonczal.bsky.social. I understand that tariffs--really, trade war--generating a lasting supply shock isn't the base case, but it's a risk & an interesting, scary frame. Adjacent worries here: econjared.substack.com/p/the-fed-mu...

The divergence here from two companies with *very* similar customer bases is pretty wild, you do not see this sort of thing happen at scale very often.

After watching 60 Minutes tonight, Trump calls on FCC Chair Brendan Carr to revoke CBS’s broadcast license.

Even if you support tariffs, it is completely insane and self-defeating to have tariff rates & exemptions changing almost daily on presidential whim. Business investment is paralyzed, as are consumers. No revenue will be raised. This is why tariffs should be set by legislation. Wake up Congress.

Normally if someone tries to kill a governor, the president is briefed, calls the governor, and issues a statement committing resources to bringing perps to justice. It’s not just that we don’t expect Trump to be kind—we have to wonder if he’ll allow a real investigation at all.

NEW: Andrew Cuomo used ChatGPT to help write the housing plan he released this weekend, which included several nonsensical passages. The plan even cites to ChatGPT on a section about the Rent Guidelines Board. hellgatenyc.com/andrew-cuomo...

It looks very much like the Department of Homeland Security memo seeking to revoke Ozturk's visa copied language directly from the Canary Mission website. Is DHS just following the "deport list" from an anonymous website? donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-attack...

Many native-born American immigration lawyers have received official letters from the government demanding that they self-deport. Apparently DHS used a list of aliens including many who listed their attorneys’ contact info by way of a care-of address. The country’s in the very best of hands.

Here is a good background why you can't simply bully Europe into buying more American agri products.

Our community keeps growing. Thankful for all of you. @bsky.app liberalcurrents.com

Another astounding @gelliottmorris.com chart of the week: the disconnect between inflation expectations and media sentiment about the economy under Trump (but not under Biden).

We're moving down the road to tyranny very quickly here

Days before ICE detained Tufts University student Rumeysa Ozturk, the State Dept. determined that the Trump administration had not produced evidence showing she engaged in antisemitic activities or made public statements supporting a terrorist organization. www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

Nothing to worry about, just a shadowy group of mercenaries pitching a dangerous authoritarian regime to build massive for-profit gulags abroad. What could go wrong? www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

Because people are talking abt Hanania again, here’s my story exposing his white supremacist past - and, I would argue, present. Straight-up eugenicist who wrote for Richard Spencer. Wtf are we doing here, why are people so determined to make him respectable www.huffpost.com/entry/richar...

occam's razor is that the people trying to make him respectable just agree with him

Financial Times: "Since 1990, America has lost over 5 million manufacturing jobs. In that time, it has gained 11.8 million roles in professional and business services, and 3.3 million in transportation and logistical activities, linked to multinational supply chains." #EconSky

If Kristi Noem can go down to El Salvador and take concentration camp selfies, then DOJ can figure out where Abrego Garcia is. Just start jailing people for contempt of court until they find out.

NEW: A second filing today from the DOJ tells Judge Xinis that in their view, since Mr. Abrego is in Bukele's custody, she can't order them to do anything further to bring him back since that's not what "facilitate" means. They also say the deal with Bukele is classified and/or a state secret.

I hate to be that guy, but this is the five-alarm fire, and every elected Democrat and frankly, every Washington reporter should be ringing the bell. If it can happen to him, it can happen to anyone. Nobody with a voice should give this administration a moment’s peace about it.

I’m not a lawyer or anything but I feel like you can draw a pretty direct line from John Yoo being allowed to slip back into the comforts of tenure and the occasional NYT oped to what’s happening with the CECOT and doj

I'm a lawyer and this is correct. Straight line of "blatantly illegal constitutional end-runs to violate human rights" from Iran–Contra to Gitmo to CECOT paved by the only consequences the perpetrators suffering being more money, more power, and more prestige.

Young men skipping out on college don't have many or any opportunities to meet women in organic, non-online dating contexts, which is in part fueling their susceptibility to radicalization and stunting their emotional intelligence. darrellowens.substack.com/p/how-i-beat...

This is really important! Less IRL socialization means that men get their information about women, sex, and dating from... other men. And the ones most eager to talk about the subject are, to put it kindly, rapist pieces of shit

international students are a lynchpin of the finances of many universities - they pay full-freight tuition and are not eligible for most types of financial aid - its hard not to read this as a particularly cruel and callous part of the right's attempt to defund and destroy America's universities.

Nearly 300,000 new electric vehicles (EVs) were sold in the first quarter of 2025 in the US, an increase of 11.4% year over year. Despite many obstacles — and what you may read elsewhere — electric-vehicle sales continue to grow at a healthy pace. GM/Hyundai made the most gains this quarter.

Oh, I just realized that I should have used the baby-having conversation to plug my look at how immigration has backstopped the economy as America skews increasingly older. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Trump is using his second term to delegitimize the very concept of white-collar crime. www.axios.com/2025/04/13/t...

Harvard Professors Sue Trump Administration Over Threat to Cut Funding www.nytimes.com/2025/04/12/u...

NEW: DOJ doubles down on refusing to follow Judge Xinis's orders. Today's status report contains nothing new. It again fails to provide information about steps they're taking to bring Mr. Abrego back), and arguably violates her command that a declaration be made by someone with personal knowledge.

New, from me: Marco Rubio used to boast that he was banned from China, calling it a totalitarian state. Now he combines a) new surveillance capabilities to monitor and punish international students, with b) little accountability or due process. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-attack...

The intellectual isolation of the US is a serious problem for all of us. The article features a couple of our outspoken Sydney HPS grad students. Obstacles to the brilliant trans student doing a PhD in the US are very disturbing. #STS @4sonline.bsky.social @hpspodcast.bsky.social @sthv.bsky.social

"What we are seeing is a purge—of the administrative state, of the universities, of expertise—that is consistent with events like the Cultural Revolution in China in the 1960s and ’70s, or the dismantling of the tsarist civil service after the Bolshevik Revolution" www.thenation.com/article/soci...

CBS News poll: Americans see Trump’s tariff policies benefitting the wealthy and large corporations- not the working class or small businesses.

The joke is… it’s not going to benefit them either. Except maybe the ones trading on advance knowledge of the mad king’s daily whim.
