Jimmy Carter gave the commencement speech at Rice University my freshman year there. I remember he was introduced as, “The only person who has used the presidency of the United States as a stepping stone to greater things.” That’s my enduring memory of the man. He exemplified how one uses a life.

I met my friend Doug in grad school. He offered to stomp on my new white sneakers to make them a little less shiny. He was an econ genius who wrote his own piano music but also regularly got thrown out of bars. Smoked but always gave it up for lent. Hilarious. Left us in his 30s, always remembered.
