my new comic, inspired by the lady who shows up at local planning meetings with a megaphone to shout down new housing developments in neighbourhoods she does not live in

Here, the one with the megaphone publishes the local paper--so many columns arguing that plans to relieve the city's housing crisis shouldn't include the area where he bought his house in the '70s (cuz the area was originally single-family housing, and a few 4-flats will ruin the "character")
You forgot that she also doesn't want new housing because there might be a mysterious uptick in "traffic" even though we're at the intersection of two rapid ride bus lines and she's been opposing the light rail extension too oh wait is that just my particular NIMBY
Meanwhile, in the suburbs, I'm living in a trailer park watching as a $2.5 billion development is going up across the street from me to house folks who can't afford to live in the city. I've got a great landlord, but it's only a matter of time before he's forced to sell and we're all pushed out.
he was a proposed development that would convert a parking lot into 5,500 housing units in a city with a 20,000+ unit shortage, she was an old lady with a megaphone, can I make it any more obvious
This is brilliant! Really clarifies the issue. It is also impossible to talk to these people, so they won't be impressed. And who knows how many of them will vote for TFG because this is the hill they are ready to die on.
If we had more housing, we'd have more people, so we'd have more sustainable business so I don't need to drive 20 minutes for anything beyond the most basic necessities. (We have a drugstore, grocery, hardware store, but they're small. Anything out of most common items, you're stuck.)
friend recently mentioned her equally NIMBY manager said she felt bad "for people on the cruises who come out to halifax and see the encampments" and i genuinely have never felt more violent in my life
apologies for linking to the bad bird site but i've definitely been on a call with her except it was a he, and he was a former planner quoting "Oppenheimer" (who was quoting the Bhagavad Gita) as to why an apartment in Stittsville shouldn't be built https://x.com/DeanTester/status/1760311506745303185
Here in the UK she’d stand no chance. Every development, no matter how unsuitable or environmentally damaging, no matter how cut off from services, no matter how greenfield the site, gets permission. Yet house prices keep rising 🤷♂️ Someone’s being conned.
In Toronto it's something ridiculous like 25 of 50 letters to shoehorn a development. There is pearl clutching over damn fourplexes. A TIM HORTONS DRIVETHRU BEINT HARD TO GET INTO was used as a reason to try to get a development stop.
Some years ago I applied to put a small architect-designed brick porch on my front door. There was one objection from a woman about 10 miles away, who said "It wasn't in keeping with the style of the house." I got my porch & 6 months later she moved back to Australia, where she was originally from.
Sadly the exact we thing is happening in Dallas with the NIMBY of oldsters opposing replacing empty 1970s era shopping plazas with high density residential because the we my people will move into the neighborhood
Change dot org helpfully shared a petition from a couple towns over here in Connecticut (not one of the really wealthy areas) that was protesting a request to rezone a couple parcels for "higher density" development. Yeah, I'm not signing that, you NIMBYs.

"You're the only one who can afford to show up at the meetings to badger us incessantly, so OF COURSE we'll listen to you!"
Because everyone else above is working unnatural hours to eke out a pittance, thus are unable to show up.
Evergreen, really.

Clearly the NIMBYs weren't actually listening to the presentation.

Have a planning office that looks at where housing is needed and where it can be built well and just build it, local opposition be damned
She is not a member of our neighborhood association, which is understandable bc she lives in an entirely different neighborhood. She still shows up
get in the firing squad sightline, gramps
Although I don't think we have anyone who's brought a megaphone. Yet.

You think he'd know, considering he paid the downpayment on my sister's house, which was $50,000.
