Iowa pollster Ann Selzer filed an absolutely blistering response to Trump’s lawsuit against her and Des Moines Register, calling it a flagrant attempt to circumvent the First Amendment. www.thefire.org/sites/defaul...

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

“Going back to Haiti is a death sentence, really.” Haitian immigrants moved to Colorado on the promise of a good job and a place to stay—only to be mistreated. Now, they fear deportation. Ted Genoways with @thefern.org reports for our latest episode of Reveal.

Gov. Mills showed precisely the sort of integrity in the face of political pressure that the majority of the party currently lacks. More importantly, she did so extemporaneously and without hesitation from a purple state where this isn't a universally popular position. www.maine.gov/governor/mil...

In a statement issued late Friday, Mills said, "Do not be misled: this is not just about who can compete on the athletic field, this is about whether a president can force compliance with his will, without regard for the rule of law that governs our nation." https://buff.ly/3Qwpghc

1/The relatively sudden loss of US funding is jeopardising the future of fact-checkers, independent media and a whole host of other efforts to protect information integrity. New(ish) from @jeffstone.bsky.social and me

"just as the general public can’t enter the kitchen or the manager’s office, neither can ICE without a judicial warrant giving them explicit permission. “You should consider placing signage indicating certain areas as ‘private’ to distinguish them from public areas in advance of any ICE raid,”

The United States appears to be in violation of the Budapest Memorandum which disarmed Ukraine of nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees. The agreement signed by the US in 1994 specifically prohibits economic coercion against Ukraine.

“We are hollowing out our government in a way that is going to hurt people and is going to get people killed,” said Amy Paris, who had been working to help reform the US organ transplantation network. “That is the scariest thing in the world.” New: @anniewaldman.bsky.social @deldeib.bsky.social

Firing all of the JAGs (Judge Advocates General)—the top lawyers in each service branch—is just as bad as, if not worse than, firing (most of) the Joint Chiefs.

They’re also firing generals and attorneys for the crime of not being male.

The EU is preparing a package of about €20 billion ($20.9 billion) in additional military support for Ukraine, according to a person familiar with the matter, as the bloc races to secure assistance for Kyiv in the face of President Donald Trump’s push to reach a quick peace settlement with Russia.

btw, i will tell you this - i have been talking to people all day, and the media is missing, whether intentionally or not, how absolutely, volcanically angry the people who have been fired are, not because they lost their jobs, but because their jobs matter, *to us*

One of the big questions with coups is who the military sides with. It's a big question now. Does the firing of a whole lot of leadership make the military now more malleable, or does it anger and alienate a lot of people down the chain of command? www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

In summation, a qualified Black man got fired and will be replaced with a white man who doesn’t meet the qualifications for the position.

saying it again: if there are "conditions" on aid to california, no democrat should vote for any disaster aid of any kind to any state. all states get aid or no states get aid. that's it

Waiting for COMPANY at #OvertureCenter. 😁❤️

BREAKING — States attorneys general lead by @newyorkstateag.bsky.social were just granted a preliminary injunction in their case against DOGE. The team cannot access Treasury Department payment systems or data while the lawsuit proceeds. Major.

This is quite significant in many ways: the overt thuggery, Trump’s barely suppressed fury at being contradicted by a woman, the governor’s standing up, the total abandonment of the pretense of federalism, the continuing use of trans Americans the way Hitler used Jews.

Another scoop from @peard33.bsky.social: DOGE installed Tom Krause at the Treasury Department. He's keeping his job as the CEO of a software company that has millions of dollars in federal contracts, including with the Treasury Department www.wired.com/story/krause...

This is climate arson, yes, but also the entire value proposition of Tesla, the reason for its insane stock price, is that it would end up the Amazon of electric cars: the only real game in town. Killing off non-Tesla electric car infrastructure is a gift to Musk.

“Shortly after Friday’s exchange, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced that it launched a Title IX violation investigation into Maine’s Department of Education and one of its school districts.”

We just won a court order stopping DOGE and unauthorized, unelected, and unvetted individuals like Elon Musk from accessing people's private data and blocking federal funds. We will keep fighting to protect all Americans from this administration’s destruction.

🚨BREAKING: Federal Court GRANTS sweeping nationwide injunction against Trump DEI executive orders finding that they violate First and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution. A huge victory for @democracyforward.org and its clients. A stinging loss for Trump. Visit www.democracydocket.com for details.

The Maine Principal's Association said it would continue to allow trans girls to compete in school sports, saying President Trump's recent executive order is in conflict with state law.

Folks, yes, he's not talking about "computer voting." He's laying the groundwork for saying that paper ballots counted by computers are not reliable & must be dismissed. And then he will say that it is taking too long for paper ballots to be counted by hand, & therefore they must be dismissed. Etc.

GOOD (I mean, bad that they had to do this, but good that they are.)

Update: The White House is already backing down on this. Keep calling your reps. Keep pressuring them. Along with your reps, the white house phone number is (202) 456-1111. Use 5calls.org to get all your reps in one place along with a guide. www.nysun.com/article/whit...

It occurs to me that one helpful talking point that needs repetition until we're sick of it: Mass firing of federal employees will raise unemployment — and mean more qualified people are competing with *you* for good jobs.

Important to start admitting that we’re living under Schrodinger’s constitution—one that is not in effect whenever it constrains Republican powers, but is in effect whenever it can be used to stymie democrats or suppress opposition.

Statement from the Musk-appointed head of SSA celebrating the deletion of research grants studying the financial security of the older adults and the disabled. Just one way that the richest man in the world is dictating societal priorities. www.ssa.gov/news/press/r...

where are all the newspaper columnists calling for the cops to violently crack down on CPAC like they do on college kids? go bust some heads and ruin some lives for these scumbags like you do for kids protesting the killing of innocents?

“Trump Third Term Project” banner sighted at CPAC: “For Trump 2028…and beyond!” The overtly fascist eagle and the Romanesque Trump bust with Caesar laurels should be…er…concerning to those who know their history (as should the intimation that Trump will never leave office)

Two years ago, UW-Madison and Milwaukee Public Schools partnered to bring more special education teachers into the district. The project was working. Last week, the Trump administration ended the program. www.wpr.org/news/trump-c...

happy friday! just leaving this here...

If you are an agency employee asked to take a polygraph contact a lawyer *immediately*. I am more than willing to immediately respond to anyone being pushed into this. My email is in my bio and my signal is NationalSecurityCounselors.16

Donald Trump blanketed swing states in flyers pledging to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Instead, he's empowered Elon Musk to slash them by $500 billion a year. Call your members of Congress and demand they protect our benefits: (202) 224-3121

The words and actions of America’s leaders show they believe that having dark skin or having a vagina is a reason a person shouldn’t be allowed to pilot a plane, while having a drinking or drug problem is not. That’s their priority, and they’re fine with the flying public suffering the consequences.

This is fantastic reporting and really powerful stuff. I’ll post some clips but read it for yourselves. This gets to something I was stressing before, “probationary” firings includes lots of senior and experienced people. Also, the veteran and spouse aspect of this is very important politically.
