On Monday the Supreme Court hears a case that could strike down the ACA mandate that insurers cover preventive services at no cost to patients. We found that ~40 million people with private insurance use these free services, including half of enrolled women. JAMA Health Forum: ja.ma/3GcUZC6 🩺📊

Days after a delegation of House Republicans were in that slave labor camp for a photo op.

I am not stupid or egotistical enough to think the regime cares about me, and I’m aware I’m a citizen (not Protestant white tho so, you know), but just as a mere thought experiment for empathy’s sake my wife and I — who I imagine are in a more comfortable position than Garcia’s family — just asked…

After writing my history of concentration camps, I came to believe that short of committing murder yourself, one of the worst things you can do is to abet or exploit the suffering of another human being to increase your own power in the world.

All science grants selected through peer review now must be reviewed by the commissars

I don’t really wanna hear that some people might be so odious they don’t deserve due process. We gave Göring, Ribbentrop, Keitel, etc. a fucking trial.

If you’re in line to punch RFK Jr in the dick, STAY IN LINE!

i think jk rowling always assumed poverty was causing her inability to experience joy but then she got rich and a new culprit was required

This is an inevitable consequence of giving ICE agents daily deportation quotas: they take shortcuts and routinely fuck up Meanwhile, the actually dangerous people they should be focused on continue to live free because ICE resources are diverted away from finding them to finding easy/soft targets

New from me: an essay on the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, and its remarkable 30 year history of witch hunts & blacklists. It chronicles the progression of how industries & academia went from capitulation to defiance,& what we can take from that today www.lawfaremedia.org/article/proc...

Today @vanhollen.senate.gov was denied entry to the same prison.

Got a new one today when the press secretary accused him of being a "human trafficker" just absolutely out of thin air!

This afternoon, someone bought Nvidia puts that would only pay off if the stock fell sharply. They weren’t cheap. But they were perfectly timed. By 9 pm, those puts were up over 600%. That doesn’t look like luck. That looks like insider trading. www.dataandpolitics.net/nvidia-expor...

Trying to install commissars in every part of society - first a private university, now a legal nonprofit. Could not be more contrary to the ideals of this country.

Beneath the patina of technobabble and baroque fanfiction, it's notable how banal this all is, completely indistinguishable from any other millenarian religious movement, with visions of salvation, damnation, a manichean struggle, schisms and prophecies and false messiahs.

Liberal achievements in the last century did not happen, because of democracy. They happened *in spite of democracy*. Rights movements were rarely popular. Liberals under the current regime should remember that.

Just a reminder how classic what we're seeing is: 1. redefine a group as a threat to civilization 2. reduce legal protections that they enjoy 3. abuse, threaten, harm, and/or relocate them 4. dismiss/ignore concerns about abuses and harms from the process 5. repeat steps 2-4, escalating each time

Generally we think of alt-text as the domain of those with accessibility needs. However alt-text is useful for many reasons, which benefit your viewers, as well as you, the creator!

Donald is like Jesus if Jesus worked on commission, kickbacks, and extended warranty sales and did all of the things he said not to do.

Seth Rogan Speaks Truth to Billionaires, Gets Censored. “It’s amazing that others…in this room underwrote electing a man who, in the last week, single-handedly destroyed all of American science.” Can’t give a science prize w/o science. 🤷‍♂️ [kottke.org]

I say this: in a dark way, we are lucky that so much of the online discourse that curdles the brains of ppl like the man who tried to kill Shapiro treats R politcians as NPCs & not actual electeds w agency bc if this attack had been against an R gov, we'd be in a much worse space re Trumps response

I'm in contact with student journalists around here too and yeah same. Lots of college papers about to have entirely "Staff writer" bylines

I can't emphasize enough that the most important thing journalists can do right now is publish exactly this kind of article

almost have to wonder if the absence of repercussions for those who committed many of the last several decades' most heinous crimes could have in some way lead to the events of today!! i bet a line could be somehow drawn between abu ghraib and el salvador, by a skilled enough researcher

to me, if i was an ice agent or police officer or anything like that, i would think about what happens after. because whether it's 4 years or 40, there will be an after. they made movies and tv shows about the guys who hunted down 80 year old nazis. there'll be an after

Re:LRT I don’t want to mythologize “due process” under our current system. It’s horrific and traumatic and causes a huge amount of harm. My only point is that our system has, over the last decades, taken away protection after protection after protection until only the flimsiest shield remained.

RFK Jr is in a challenging position: he's a lifelong anti vaxxer but also the secretary of HHS! He has to say nice things about vaccines occasionally now - enraging his MAHA base. So his propaganda media outlet, Children's Health Defense, has been helping run cover... apnews.com/article/robe...

It's not for nothing that I regularly emphasize the importance of the rule of law. Many people make the economy their top priority and the rule of law a variable, only to pay dearly for it when arbitrariness comes knocking. My family experienced this 80 years ago, which is why I insist.

It drives me crazy. To dare to talk about protecting the Earth when all you're doing is a PR stunt that pollutes the equivalent of a decade of a Westerner's life who already pollute a lot. I love space exploration, but space tourism for selfish rich people is a cancer.

If you're sick and tired of your Tesla and all the baggage that now comes with it, Aaron just rounded up some of the many, many alternatives to consider, including our picks for the most enticing and/or similar un-Musked vehicles for each model: www.cars.com/articles/tes...

We've seen videos like this before, but usually when you see a tearful wife pleading with the kidnappers who have taken her husband, she's not talking to the U.S. president

It is so wild how folks just let The Noid talk over them like that. Give him the same level of respect Domino’s gave him and keep it moving.

Right there with ya, Hank.

Yeah, pretty much. I joked about classrooms having the 10 commandments versus the (first) 10 amendments and now I’m not really joking anymore. People don’t care about their own rights or know how they function.

DOGE is a criminal conspiracy to defraud the people of the United States

I Didn’t Think Things Would Get This Chaotic When We Elected President Donkey Kong. “But for all the talk from pundits about how we’d see a new side of Donkey Kong once he took office, well, not so much. Turns out we got exactly what we voted for.” [mcsweeneys.net]

Amanda Nguyen and Aisha Bowe actually do deserve better than a ten minute joyride with no scientific value and a press corps focused on their feelings and makeup.

This, sadly, is true. The United States government is in the hands of morally depraved and morally corrupted people who are enabled by moral cowards and the morally apathetic.

☹️ Pepper got returned to the shelter. When he first came in last year he was the scrungliest stray but so sweet. He looked like he was 3x his actual age. He got adopted a couple months ago and I don’t know why he was returned but he is just the nicest gentleman. www.hsccvt.org/Cats#sl_embe...

I am belatedly sitting down with, and loving (and being terrified by), @swordsjew.bsky.social's Wild Faith. Is vital as an eyebrow-raising field guide to the current <all this>. Is also fantastic writing.

Because it helps me, personally, to see people whose assessment I trust articulate this, I want to say: Yesterday, for me, was one of those overwhelming days where I can't quite manage to compartmentalize enough to keep functioning, handle the responsibilities of everyday life, be a decent parent.

But Canada won’t disappear people and that is what we are in the market for.

Reminders: "Concentration camps" aren't the same as "extermination camps." Both were/are horrific. Most Nazi camps were *outside Germany*, away from the eyes of German citizens. Those trains? Were to, uh, deport the category of people whose lives were deemed unimportant. Never again is now.

i'm watching a group of conservative law professors insist that there is a grand debate over birthright citizenship that somehow escaped generations of scholarship and only popped into existence after a right-wing president announced an effort to nullify the 14th amendment.

The fact that the government is using charges of antisemitism to justify sending people to concentration camps is the most enraging manipulation of discourse that the current fascists have engaged in thus far. They’ll live out their Nazi fantasies all while claiming they are doing it for the Jews.
