"trying to pick up the pieces after a vicious unprovoked dog attack" is actually exactly what the last four months have felt like so I guess we were kind of prepared for this

The Developer Success Lab is looking for engineers who work in infrastructure for a research study on the working experience of SREs, platform engineers, DevOps engineers, and software developers who maintain or develop infrastructure.

AHEM. (I didn't know about Donna M. Riley's work until now, so it's exciting to learn about it.)

Why does this go hand in hand with so much work that conveniently slides toward invisibility?

A world without Trans people has never existed, and it never will. More than visibility, we need safety 🏳️‍⚧️

"I tweeted a crime but then I deleted it" is not, actually, a defense.

A few years ago I visited the National Museum of African American History & Culture with my grandparents. When we stepped out of the building my grandmother kept repeating the words “I lived it. I lived it. I lived it.” She’s still here. That history is still in her bones. You can never erase that.

NEW: Rümeysa Öztürk's attorneys—now including the ACLU!—describe her arrest and detention as "part of a concerted and systemic effort by Trump administration officials to punish students and others identified with pro-Palestine activism." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

NEWS: Jenner & Block sued to challenge Trump's executive order in D.C. federal court this morning. They are represented by lawyers from Cooley LLP, and are seeking similar relief to the Perkins Coie challenge. Complaint: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

If we can let go of the techie nonsense for a moment to pay attention to what really matters, not the jargon & tech details, but the values of real experts who do civic tech--it all becomes clearer. Patience, dialogue, intentionality, service, transparent and shared reasoning vs draconian power

No solutions only trade offs

I think a real important lesson of age or experience is realizing that ideas are cheap. You have to wonder "why has no one done this thing yet" ... And maybe there's no good reason, but usually it exposes depth to the problem.

The 25% automobile tariffs: • increase auto prices by 13.5%, the equivalent of $6,400 on the average new car. • **reduce** US auto production & increase Chinese auto production in the long-run if other countries retaliate to our tariffs. • Reduce long- & short-run US GDP 1/2

"The detention and attempted deportation of student activists on spurious grounds—and the use of armed, typically masked agents of the state to do so—perfectly captures the real, menacing story of the second Trump administration," writes @alexshephard.bsky.social. newrepublic.com/article/1932...

Interesting-ish overview article about DOGE, but my God @nytimes.com, FRAMING. You should be saying these are "so-called cost cutting measures" and DOGE is "possibly illegally firing workers and cancelling contracts". You sort of get to it at the end but THAT IS THE STORY.

Excited to read this. People who know me know I’m always yapping about the social construction of data; data are made, not gathered! What we call “bias” in observational data in epi is actually a byproduct of the social construction process!!

Lawlessness and grievance, that’s all he’s got. Fighting back has to be the answer.

1/5 📄✨ITS FINALLY HERE!📄✨. After _five_ years, our new model evaluation metric — The InterModel Vigorish (IMV) — is now published (@plosone.org). Paper: bit.ly/3RlqrQH Preprint: bit.ly/41LzGjm Code: github.com/intermodelvigorish ‘What’s the vig on this action?’ (bit.ly/4hPoZ3Z). ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Extremely disappointing & cowardly. The American Psychological Association is rescinding diversity requirements. Not due to any actual mandate from the federal government, but only because it may *someday* face pressure from the government www.nytimes.com/2025/03/27/h...

NEWS: Trump is trying to end collective bargaining across a wide swath of the federal government, claiming targeted agencies “have as a primary function intelligence, counterintelligence, investigative, or national security work.” www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

My wife just realized our toothpaste says it's 99% Earth sourced. 😳

Warms me cold heart

A thread of well-intended people talking past each other. Both can be true-- bipolar disorder can have modest heritability (.1 - .2), even more modest relation to PGS (~.05), and still smaller correlations with genes, but still not have a meaningful "genetic architecture." Everything is heritable.

these two members of congress are ostensibly communicating the same thing, but rep dexter's message is all wrong and sen van hollen's is right. convict them, dont give them any ground. you dont ever gotta hand it to them.

NEW: During these mass interruptions in NIH funding, scientists have been screaming for help from their institutions. I wrote about the handful of universities that are trying to keep researchers afloat by offering bridge funding — will there be enough to go around? www.chronicle.com/article/face...

The Montana Bathroom ban is signed into law. Gianforte thanked the Alliance Defending Freedom and Riley Gaines in his address. This makes it against the law for trans people to use the bathroom in the airport, parks, the capitol building, and more. It also impacts me and my wife Zooey personally.

I just hit 1k followers so as one does I'm going to sell this for clicks and ask which charity you want me to donate $1,000 to. I will donate via @givingmultiplier.bsky.social. I don't promise to donate to the most popular but I will tell you what I end up doing.
