"We're pleased to present this updated org chart that captures our system of governance (which management scientists term “Kafkaesque bureaucracy meets Lord of the Files,” though no one understands these references since we cut our literature requirements)."

This is the same rationale for rejecting AI for legal work. It’s through engaging with the text of the law that the reasoning occurs. You cannot avoid the work.

As we watch all mention of diversity actively get scrubbed from the NIH website in real time it's important to know that, we were not taking over anything, we were just trying to exist. - Only 2% of NIH R01 grants are awarded to Black investigators. The goal is total erasure/elimination.

I haven't really used #rstats case_match before, but I think I'll start using it more. It's a nice little time saver and reduces repetition.

We just learned that our insurance is awful. We do not have enough coverage to rebuild and we do not have any coverage at all for temporary housing. So essentially, we have a mortgage and no home. Housing is outrageously expensive in Los Angeles. So I’m bumping this fundraiser again. Please share ❤️

Some tips for making and keeping New Year's resolutions! @ucriverside.bsky.social news.ucr.edu/articles/202...

Tip from a journal editor: if you are late on a review, ask for an extension so we know when to expect it and so we can adjust those annoying auto reminders. I almost always would rather have a late review than no review.

Dear academics We could dramatically reduce our administrative workload if we all just agreed not to ask for reference letters until we made our list of finalists. This is massive collective action problem has already been solved by… *checks notes* …every other industry on earth.

Who is for abolishing grad app letters of rec at the point of application? Would it be so bad if letters were requested AFTER candidates were shortlisted? If we do this at UCSD who will join us?

I am BEGGING schools to stop requesting letters of recommendation from all students before you read their application. Trying to write letters for eight students who are applying to 10 schools each is going to drive me mad.

I'm curious what mentors tell new PhD students about how to approach reading the literature. Aside from suggestions about what to read, I feel like I should have more specific advice than "read a lot". Any tips?
