Day 27 of #LGBTplusHM25. On the anniversary of my first ever public Antinous lecture, in 2009, at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, my local #Antinous head, the Townley, discovered on Rome’s Janiculum Hill c.July 1773 and purchased by the British Museum, where it resides today, in 1805. 🏳️‍🌈

Day 26 of #LGBTplusHM25: the colossal, 135cm, red marble, Osiris #Antinous, excavated at Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli and known in Italy since C16th, it was purchased by Ludwig II and displayed in Munich since 1816, and now held - and beautifully displayed - by the Staatlichen Museum Ägyptischer Kunst. 🏳️‍🌈

Day 25 of #LGBTplusHM25. When is an #Antinous not an Antinous? When the name alone is used! Jean Cocteau's 1957 limited ‘Antinous’ editions are clearly based on the face of his lover and muse, the actor and director, Jean Marais, (1913-98) described in his youth as 'an Antinous of the people.’ 🏳️‍🌈

Day 24 of #LGBTplusHM25: a striking, albeit heavily restored, 86.5 cm black marble statuette of #Antinous as Dionysos. Although its precise provenance is unknown, the statuette belonged to Venetian, Bishop Giovanni Grimani, in the C16th and was acquired by Berlin's Altes Museum in 1854. 🏳️‍🌈

Congratulations to the people of Germany, and many thanks for helping to bolster Western democracy in these increasingly difficult times. #NoToFascism

Day 23 of #LGBTplusHM25: the gorgeously displayed Parian marble #Antinous of the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Wirral. Excavated in Rome in 1794, the fragmentary 232.5 cm statue underwent two years of major restoration by Giovanni Pierantoni, who reworked the piece as the divine cupbearer, Ganymede. 🏳️‍🌈

Day 22 of #LGBTplusHM25: a slightly lesser than life marble head of #Antinous, wearing the diadem of a priest of the Imperial cult, which bears representations of Trajan and Hadrian. Discovered at the Campo della Magna Mater, Ostia, now displayed at Palazzo Massimo alle Terme. 🏳️‍🌈

On the ninety-ninth anniversary of his birth, remembering the incredible erudition and waspish wit of the late, great, comic genius Kenneth Williams (1926-1988). #FryingTonight #InfamyInfamy #StopMessingAbout

Very sad; a lovely performer and a delightful, beautifully nuanced performance. A perfect foil to Robert Stephens’ Holmes. Vale! ☂️

Day 21 of #LGBTplusHM25: an impressively carved marble #Antinous bust, excavated in Rome during the mid C16th and held by Count Bevilacqua and his descendants, until acquired in 1811 by the future, famed, Ludwig I of Bavaria for the planned Munich Glyptothek, where it is currently displayed. 🏳️‍🌈

Day 20 of #LGBTplus25: the upper, 70 cm, portion of a Greek marble statue of #Antinous rediscovered in 1671 - somewhat astonishingly - within a quarry outside Rome. The piece was purchased by Cardinal Leopoldo de Medici and entered Florence's famed Uffizi Galleries in 1676. 🏳️‍🌈

The end of a truly glittering era… ! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Wishing a very happy second birthday to our quirky, funny, loving, and handsome best-boy, Augustus, who never likes to sit on the ground, if other options are available…! Jx

Day 19 of #LGBTplusHM25 Anton von Maron's 1768 portrait of the father of archaeology and art history, JJ Winckelmann, shown with an engraving of the Albani relief, excavated at Tivoli in 1750, and depicting #Antinous as the god Vertumnus, popularised, internationally, by Winckelmann’s writings. 🏳️‍🌈

Well, it would appear that, after more than a century, we have a newly discovered XVIIIth Dynasty royal tomb, belonging to Tuthmosis II, the prematurely deceased husband to Hatshepsut and father to Tuthmosis III. Congratulations to the excavation teams! #Egyptology www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Day 18 of #LGBTplusHM25: a small, 24.1 cm, slightly battered but elegantly sculpted marble head of #Antinous as Dionysos Although original provenance is unknown, the piece was gifted in 1996 to the Metropolitan Museum by the actor Bronson Pinchot, in recognition of his mother, Rosina Asta Pinchot. 🏳️‍🌈

Delighted to welcome my splendid colleagues at @issegyptomania.bsky.social to Bluesky 🦋. Please consider giving them a follow on this platform, or even in becoming a member, they do incredible work on the reception of ancient Egypt and host numerous online lectures, seminars, and conferences!

Day 17 of #LGBTplusHM25: the upper 70cm of a marble #Antinous statue, this substantially restored head, wearing the nemes headcloth was discovered at Tivoli in 1769, and sat, largely forgotten, in Thornbridge Hall, Derbyshire from 1945, where it was, happily, recognised by art consultants in 2010. 🏳️‍🌈

Days 15 & 16 of #LGBTplusHM25 are two elegantly Egyptianising, 3.35m #Antinous telamons, carved in red granite from Aswan. Originally created for the Antinoeion of Hadrian's Villa. The left statue breaks the Egyptian convention of striding upon the left foot. Now installed in the Vatican Museums. 🏳️‍🌈

Wishing everyone a very happy Valentine’s Day. This year has been a hard one: we spent this morning bidding farewell to our dear friend Irene Woodward (1932-2025) and, tonight, raising a glass to her memory in her favourite Italian restaurant. So much a part of our lives. Vale, Daaaahhhhling! Jx

Day 14 of #LGBTplusHM25: a superb, powerfully eroticised 2.24m marble statue of Apollo Lyceus, excavated in the Frigidarium of the Hadrianic Baths at Leptis Magna, in 1924/5. Research shows that the original face of the statue was anciently removed to be replaced with that of #Antinous. 🏳️‍🌈

Day 13 of #LGBTplusHM25. The 1.84m marble #Antinous of Delphi as it was discovered on 1 July 1894, having been carefully secreted away, upright, by the ancient priests of the Temple of Apollo almost two millennia beforehand...and as it is today, on display in the Archaeological Museum of Delphi. 🏳️‍🌈

Day 12 of #LGBTplusHM25: exquisite 143cm tall, Pentellic marble relief of #Antinous as the Roman forest deity Silvanus, Excavated at Torre del Padiglione, Italy, in 1907. The surface is inscribed by the artist, Antonianos of Aphrodisias. The relief is on display at the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme. 🏳️‍🌈

Day 11 of #LGBTplusHM25: the marble magnificence of the Braschi #Antinous, standing at 3.26m tall. Excavated at Palestrina in 1792/3, it identifies Antinous with both Osiris and Dionysos, although the more obviously Egyptian elements - a uraeus and lotus - have been lost in restoration. Stunning! 🏳️‍🌈
