Having a bit of a hard time with the concept that if a guy in a police uniform who has a police vehicle shows up I should lock the doors and call 911, but if a guy in a ski mask with an hGH gut appears to be kidnapping my neighbor, I shouldn’t ask who he is if I don’t want federal charges.

A doctor charged with giving Matthew Perry ketamine in the month leading up to the “Friends” star’s overdose death has agreed to plead guilty, authorities said Monday.

The Times questioning Zohran’s experience kinda just boils down to ideology & racism but the idea of 33 being too young to hold a major political office is so funny. If he was a CEO of a startup that produced something worse than nothing they’d write a glowing feature on his new bold ideas.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Just quoted a worst-case scenario of 200 Higher Ed Institutions running a £4.4bn deficit within three years. That was misleading. It's worse than that: the number's for England only, so the UK situation as a whole will be quite a bit worse.

The US Army can march in unison. Synchronized. I don’t think they wanted to…

The corruption in the US is just boundless www.ft.com/content/13a6...

There's a thread on AskReddit asking, "People who have had to drain their life’s savings on a single event, what happened?" 99% of the answers are depressing American stories about medical bills, 1% is an Australian who found a wombat burrowing under their house.

Stephen is right here, and it coincides with "Public services were terrible" being almost entirely erased from the "Why did we lose so badly?" debate.

Good summary on oil price shocks & macro here. Subject to the huge caveat that this is mostly discussing the impact of markets pricing in the possibility of supply disruption rather than actual supply disruption. www.dallasfed.org/research/eco....

It's the Spectator, which I used to read, till it became, well, impossible. But if these observations and signs are correct, we are all missing a trick. www.spectator.co.uk/article/is-x...

In 2020, Fox News argued in court that it was not in fact news; it was entertainment. And also “no reasonable person” (their words) would believe what they said. I think we need to be reminding everyone of this constantly.

When I think of Brian Wilson I think how wonderful it was that he had the chance to come back from limbo with the 2002 Pet Sounds shows and then finally finish Smile. After a pretty hellish three decades, he got to see how loved he was. Those shows were celestial. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXZ_...

RIP to Brian Wilson, who gave us many perfect albums but also the perfect interview

Hello I’d like to report a(nother) murder.

Breaking news: Harvey Weinstein has been convicted by a New York jury of one charge of committing a criminal sexual act in his sexual assault retrial, a decision that comes more than a year after his 2020 conviction was overturned.

FT scoop by Demetri Sevastopulo: The Pentagon has launched review of Aukus to decide if should continue with US-UK-Australia submarine deal. www.ft.com/content/4a93...

Democratisation often occurs because wealthy people fear the risk of being expropriated by arbitrary authoritarians.

Wonder if we are seeing an AI jobs shock. And employer NI is just the catalyst. Or an NI jobs shock exacerbated by the start of the big AI jobs shock. Though there's also pain in freelance world, where people are opting for 'That'll do." And that part isn't even in the jobs numbers at all.

Rather strange profile for the real terms day-to-day education budget in the #SpendingReview - by my calculations it rises 2.8% in the first year, but then is supposed to fall by 0.2% in the second year and then 0.6% in the third year...

Great news! Southport Pier to re-open as seaside town gets its 'groove back'

dude this party is such an echo chamber. it's just friends hanging out and chilling and having a good time. you need to invite some people over who want to kill you with hammers

I used to be married to an active, vibrant, happy young woman who decided one day to hang a bird feeder in the back yard, and now I’m married to a glassy-eyed, unwashed maniac that stands at the kitchen window all day screaming at squirrels.

Just headlined something In Nvidia's Shadow. But doubt many will get the reference and so am sad.

In loco parentis HAS gone off the rails, so the arg that we talk about students as patients not scholars seems 🎯 so I’m not entirely convinced it warrants: “I’m not sure I’m entirely convinced yet” “Not everyone will find this persuasive.” These frames are not reasons; they are wellness checks.

Martial law is in the air. Really. And if they don’t act soon, GOP leaders like Cruz, Hawley, and Graham won’t be able to stop it. Even if they want to. Which I truly don’t know.

Norwegian midnight 🕊️

"I voted for lawless, anonymous, masked, and unchecked police" is one hell of a jump from "eggs cost too much."

A 1 star review of one of my books: "I hated the prologue in this book." There is no prologue in this book.

📚 #ReadingLife Good Morning #Booksky and #bookloverseverywhere

it’s funny how “i disagree on every single policy but i’ll vote for him because the other side are a bit annoying” *isn’t* identity politics

Nothing to see here just a real life Star Trek movie

Accords with my experience as well. A big part of why I spend less and less time on X is the sense of “well, what’s the point? I rarely see links to pieces and I rarely get feedback on my own”.

I do find myself wondering whether the credulous, unethical excuses for journalism at BBC Verify are going to resign now that their organisation has been fully exposed for debating embracing populist disinformation because that's what rigging story selection will do. Probably not. Oh well.
