Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts. Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

The Department of Health and Human Services has pressed the NIH to ignore court orders, dismissing NIH lawyers' advice to resume business as usual, @katherinejwu.com reports. As of this week, some institutes and centers are still not issuing any new grants: theatln.tc/MVl9uWmj

Thank you @nplb.bsky.social for speaking out in defense of patients, the US economy and our citizenship. Encouraged to see biopharma and investors among patients, health care providers, scientists and policy makers. www.nopatientleftbehind.org/defending-th...

Here are some data documenting the funding "pause" pulled from NIH Reporter. Current results (FY25) (Red) are compared with results from FY21 (first year of Biden Administration) and FY24. Note that data from Reporter lag behind release of NoAs by ~1 week. I will be tracking this going forward.

Pretty sad. Just got the email that CZI is canceling the second round of Diversity Leadership Awards. Private industry will definitely not fill the hole that NIH and NSF are leaving. 😢💔

And then there are the ancillary consequences - a constrained pipeline of new talent, and much of the best talent diverted to other professions and away from health research and public service where we really need great minds who are motivated to serve the common good.

F99/R00 AND K99/R00 DIVERSITY AWARD APPLICANTS If you have applied for a F99/R00 or K99/R00 Diversity award and the study section for review is not listed on your eRA Commons page, please reach out to me. DM me, email [email protected], Signal jeremymberg.78 THANK YOU

Research universities are often the largest employers in their region. They are often the primary health care providers to communities. This funding shift will not only reduce US research leadership, it will put working people out of work and reduce healthcare access.

I am so excited for this opportunity! Also, very grateful to the support from past and current mentors—particularly my PhD advisor Jeff Long and my postdoc mentor Nathan Gianneschi, but also many others along the way.

Just got word that our Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Inclusive Excellence 3 (IE3) Grant was being canceled. All 100+ institutions. So even private funding is susceptible to this administration’s unraveling of DEI initiatives

A lot has transpired at the NSF since last Tuesday. Here's a rundown of what's happened (so far) and how the whiplash is impacting scientists: cen.acs.org/policy/resea... #ChemSky @cenmag.bsky.social

Summer internship post is live! Candidates should, ideally, have completed a lab-based organic and an analytical/instrumentation/quant analysis course. The post solicits undergraduates, but really any qualified & motivated folks are welcome to apply here: grnh.se/ac61b1f43us #chemsky

One impact of the NSF freeze: They fund the small nonprofit, EarthScope, that manages seismic and GPS stations used worldwide to detect and warn of earthquakes and navigate autonomous vehicles. EarthScope can maybe make payroll this week. A prolonged freeze could see stations fail.

I am one of these NSF postdocs. NSF has frozen everyone’s access to their salaries and research stipends (that were already awarded) with no information about when they might be expected to be unfrozen. It still appears like we are expected to continue doing our work though.

The Attorneys General of NY, CA, MA, NJ, RI and IL are making a virtual announcement at 2pm ET "in response to the Trump Administration's unconstitutional pause on federal funding." I'll be watching and will post updates here.

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

The White House website has been wiped clean, but thanks to @erichorvitz.bsky.social , all the Biden #PCAST reports are available below. I want to thank the #PCAST members, all of whom donated their time and expertise to helping policy be science-based. tinyurl.com/2acnv2nh

If you're a scientist that serves on an NSF panel that got cancelled today, I'd love to talk to you about it for an NPR story. DM, email or reach out on signal.

I'm hearing that NSF panels have been canceled. Did any #ChemSky folks get a cancelation email today? Would appreciate hearing from you for a potential @cenmag.bsky.social article. Reach me via DM, email ([email protected]) or Signal (kvasquez.12)

Communications shutdown. Travel ban. Canceled study sections. Now a hiring freeze? Shutting down the NIH indefinitely without stated cause is literally an act of sabotage. Left: yesterday. Right: today.
