Earlier this year I wrote about Stephen Miller's whole deal—how his privileged upbringing in Santa Monica was shaped from the beginning by the labor of Latin American immigrants, and how he experienced status anxiety when his family had to live among them. www.thenation.com/article/poli...

ICE has only existed since 2003. A Bush-era creation, it is a militarized federal secret police that has been imbued with the Supreme Court with the unconstitutional power to ignore the fourth amendment. Abolishing it and salting the earth where it grew is the moderate stance.

This is why we don't have universal paid leave

The thing is, when there is no penalty for lying to Congress, serial liars are going to lie to Congress.

It's a shame that the Democrats "didn't have to votes," at any time in the entire last generation, to regularize the status of undocumented immigrants and streamline the process to enter the country legally to do necessary migrant labor.

"Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” has $185bn for ICE, which is more than the annual military budgets of the UK and France combined. Wherever ICE raids trigger protests, Trump can send in the troops." My column. www.ft.com/content/3d6c...

Reminder: The pending tax and budget bill would *vastly* expand the enforcement and detention capacity of the federal government. What's happening sporadically in cities like Los Angeles would be carried out on an unprecedented scale.

The Overton Window has shifted all the way to ban all non-white people from coming to America. It was never about illegal immigration.

drives me fucking batty that elected Democrats to a man did not see coming the extremely obvious effects of local nightly news segments about ICE trying to kidnap first graders on public sentiment re: immigration enforcement

Yeah my job is pretty cool. My uniform is a tactical vest that’s two sizes too small and a gaiter I bought in a gas station. They send me to sneak into schools to kidnap little kids because people got mad about having to press 1 for English. The president had to warn everyone to stop spitting on me.

Uh, Republicans control the house and senate, do you expect Democrats can just wave a magic wand and not praise ICE and advise people to help them

In the spirit of this great oped, journalists (inc. Goldberg) must recognize that one of Trump’s patterns is: 1. Do something wildly illegal 2. Identify the name of a law 3. Proceed to ignore every limit in that law The pattern is tricking papers into writing “Trump is invoking a rarely used law.”

Wild coincidence to have the power go out literally one minute before I go to bed and then come back on five minutes after I wake up.

By every standard of "Respect the Troops" (policy, rhetoric, etc.), Trump is always blatantly disrespectful because he simply does not respect *people*. And you obviously don't respect people when you ask them to terrorize civilians. www.sfchronicle.com/california/a...

Efficiency is when you make the troops homeless *before* they're veterans

This is 100% the fault of ICE and the Trump admin, which has deliberately incentivized this behavior with their tactics. Their goal is to encourage white nationalist groups to dress up as ICE to attack minorities, and the increase in lookalike crimes is to them an acceptable byproduct.

Philly local tv station reporting that a man allegedly posed as an ICE agent in order to rob a car repair business office. How many other criminals might be getting this idea right now, given that actual ICE agents are refusing to show IDs, warrants, badges?

These 75 Democrats joined Republicans to "express gratitude" to ICE agents and call for greater local and state collaboration with ICE. jonathancohn.medium.com/a-tale-of-tw...

During the 2020 protests, I wrote this for NBC about police: After all the lies we've seen, why in our society are police still the official arbiters of what happened? Why do they have the monopoly on legitimate storytelling? www.nbcnews.com/think/opinio...

The contrast and absurdity is so brazen. They're literally raiding Home Depots to find whatever guys are there to get work as day laborers. People eager for work. And the ICE agents has zero idea who they are or any criminal background.

Let's all take a moment to read the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. It's only one sentence.

Things are so bad that Newsom is making good points.

CNN’s reporter on scene in Los Angeles: I’m being detained..

The U.S. system of government—the two party system, the Senate that's biased to small/rural/white states, the electoral college, the lifetime Supreme Court appointments, the cult-like presidency—honestly made times like these inevitable.

Pro tip: If Jewish Democrats in the House split 10-10 on your "antisemitism" resolution, it's probably not actually about antisemitism.

The sudden switch from dog whistling to overt racism has been…stark to witness. Just terrible for our nation.

Imagine if Biden officials talked about rural residents with such contempt.

RFK Jr.‘s extreme anti-vax views — and his related conflicts of interest — were a huge problem during his confirmation process. So he promised not to change the vaccine advisory panel. Today, he fired every single expert on that panel. It's a public health disaster.

The real enemy of this administration is cosmopolitanism. Whether in Los Angeles or South Africa, multiracial pluralistic democracy is a threat to them because it means their “us or them” model of the world is wrong. So they stir up trouble on purpose and gleefully lie.
