This book about Antisemitism in Football is out next week. It's edited by Emma Poulton, and I've contributed a chapter entitled 'Football and Antisemitism in France: Visibility and Invisibility'. www.routledge.com/Antisemitism...

To celebrate the news I've had an article about humour accepted for publication in a journal, here's a picture of a donkey rolling around laughing at one of my jokes.

Just been telling oldest son about almost going to see an attempt to make the world's biggest ever Welsh cake in Bala on his first St. David's Day.

Look forward to reading this

Just seen a reminder of some of the fantastic places I've been able to visit on trips to Paris in the last few years...

Tuned in 10 minutes late for start of Italy against France rugby. Probably missed bit where commentators set scene by saying: - "you never know what you're going to get with the French" - "a certain je-ne-sais-quoi" - "panache"

x.com/languagecast... wonderful insight by Joe Hart-how difficult it can be for players to use languages not only in a football environment but in other spaces/contexts that they encounter every day is not often discussed or understood by fans/pundits #LanguageofFootball #multilingual #LearnEnglish

This weekend captains of Lorient and Athletic Bilbao will be wearing identical armbands to simultaneously promote Basque and Breton culture: www.lequipe.fr/Football/Act...

Delighted to have managed to get hold of this copy of So Foot from last year. It's full of fascinating articles about football in the Paris area.

Not sure that this Lego version of Mona Lisa has quite captured her legendary smile

Here are some of the highlights from my recent research trip to Paris where I was focusing on sport and cinema in France...

On recent trips to France, it's been fascinating to see evolution of Saint-Ouen area north of Paris. Sport has played a role, due to Paris 2024 and redevelopment of Red Star's iconic Stade Bauer.

I stayed in Ivry-sur-Seine during my recent research trip to France. There's some great street art there which brightens up the town and celebrates its past.

As I've been in Paris to do research on sport, I visited Les Jours Heureux exhibition about Paris 2024 at the Hôtel de Ville. It's mainly photo-based and celebratory, and already talking about legacy of the games only a few months after they finished.

Just learned that there's an Indian restaurant near Paris called Marie Curry. This has made my weekend 😂

Glad I brought my running shoes with me to Paris, always enjoy exploring new routes.

I was at France's National Museum for the History of Immigration recently to do some research about sport and migration. Some great resources and really helpful staff.

The awkward moment when you have to move Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and Georges Pompidou out of the way when you want to have a look at books about humour...

Rydym wedi mwynhau croesawu ymwelwyr I ddiwrnod agored heddiw / We've been enjoying welcoming visitors to an open day today

One of my highlights of 2024 was being in Paris to research sport and cinema as it prepared to host Olympics. Heading back later this month as I'm now on research leave and working towards publicaiton of book about visions of masculinity in contemporary French sports films.

These are such good reads, I especially love the one on the French history of ballooning and the Olympic 'vasque' 👇

Paris area public transport prices rose during last year's Olympics. 2025 Women's European Football Championship in Switzerland will be different. Anyone with match ticket will be able to travel to match venue for free via public transport from anywhere in Switzerland.

2024 was a fascinating year for sport, history, and politics in France. A blog article I wrote for @frenchhistory.bsky.social about #Paris2024 Opening Ceremony has now been published on the journal website as part of a round table about the games: doi.org/10.1093/fh/c...

Just seen a French footballer playing on a Nintendo… It was Thierry on Wii

Jean-Marie Le Pen died knowing his far-right politics have been successfully mainstreamed in France A few thoughts on mainstreaming and the need to look beyond the Le Pen if we are to understand and address the resurgence of reactionary politics theconversation.com/jean-marie-l...

This part of Paul Taylor's great stand-up show 'Bisoubye' reminded me of being primary school language assistant in France in 2000-01. We were given a CD with exactly these types of nursery rhymes on it :-) www.youtube.com/watch?v=DALM...

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris. Here's a look back at an article I wrote for @uk.theconversation.com in 2020 about how the 'Je suis Charlie' sentiment was already starting to ring hollow then theconversation.com/five-years-o...

Last year in Paris, I attended open air performance of Mohamed El Khatib's Stadium. It was an evocative and often moving play about football fans, focusing on fans of RC Lens. Just read book that accompanies play and which brought back many memories.

I've just watched a TV5 Monde documentary from Québec about people who are called Kevin and how they are perceived europe.tv5monde.com/fr/guide-tv/...

Nadolig llawen bawb! / Merry Christmas everyone!

As Christmas is approaching, today I'll be showing students the difference between what I consider a good Christmas cracker joke and what ChatGPT thinks is a good Christmas cracker joke.

"Despite sitting on the continent's most renowned talent pool, the French capital has been unable to sustain more than one top-flight club in decades." Some fascinating insights on Paris FC's big plans here. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/footba...

Good to see Italian football clubs weren't offended by Scottish fans chanting "we're going to deep fry your pizzas" a few years ago. --> The fitba-calcio complex: how Serie A revived its Scottish connection www.theguardian.com/football/202...

It's fascinating how French sports films are inspired by real events involving French and non-French athletes. Nils Tavernier's De toutes nos forces is set in Nice but references US father and son team Dick and Rick Hoyt who completed many marathons and triathlons together.

Random fact about new French Prime Minister François Bayrou. One of his previous cabinet roles was 'Le Garde des sceaux', basically Justice Minister but which amusingly translates as 'Keeper of the Seals' (...though not the marine mammal variety).

Would highly recommend this book if you're looking for a Christmas treat for yourself or others. One of the best football books I have read and very informative about modern French football.

8 years ago today, I visited the Musée national du sport in Nice on a research trip

Time for some reading about stand-up comedy as I work on an article. It may even improve my own joke-telling abilities, but many friends and colleagues probably see that as a lost cause. 😂
