It would seem to me, pedant that I am, that something called the "96 Collection" should feature the logo from, you know, '96. The crayon logo. The one you can't much get anymore.
(This is at least partially due to not liking the new badge all that much, but the pedantry is, as always, the key.)

Similarly, I strongly dislike the NHL putting virtual ads on the boards during broadcasts because it means I can't look at all the obscure regional ads. Seeing all those weird Quebecois ones on Bruins games in Montreal/Quebec as a kid was half the damn fun.

My gut tells me FO tried to talk out both sides of their mouth because that's how the team's operated for years now. But it's just that, my gut . . . I would like to think in that position, I wouldn't conduct business that way, but I'm also not in that position for a series of rational reasons.

Depends on your end of the spectrum. If you don't think deeply about this stuff, you love the team above/beyond any player. Siding with the front office is siding with your love.
If you think about it deeply, you can suspect one thing is true while admitting there may be facts unknown.
