Why is everything blue?

It’s here! 2024’s finest in the flesh; February 2025.

Seems I’m at the Severance Is Everywhere IRL stage of watching S2. Fonts. Shades of blue etc. Got a shock walking past one particular office near Marylebone (it’s a construction company. *apparently*)

Good to see this from @lizpelly.bsky.social’s Mood Machine published in the Guardian, but getting the broader Spotify user base to care feels like the only route to real change. Major music artists and other influential voices in music/ents are needed. Come on @trientertainment.bsky.social!

Yesterday was a good day for new music. Here are four things I really liked. Also, Damon Locks’ new album came out overnight.

I wrote this last night, lying on the floor in the dark waiting for my children to sleep. It’s about a song I’ve loved for *sharp intake of breath* 25 years. open.substack.com/pub/jonhillc...

The sun burning the frost off the fence this morning. I’ve recommended a wonderful new album by Nyron Higor - perfect for this sort of hopeful start to the day - in today’s post. open.substack.com/pub/jonhillc...

I’ve posted about a different song or two nearly every day this week. I’m still working out why. Here’s another.

Is the sound of children playing always a joyful thing?

I wrote about being thankful to those who introduce us to new music. And thanked two in particular.

Godspeed 🤘

The best song I heard today was by Raisa K and Coby Sey. I also felt old stood in the street watching John Barnes.

On unexpectedly staying up for Kendrick, and cheering the artists who create magic and art but put the onus on the audience to make sense of it

What the hell to buy on @bandcamp.com Friday, the one day a month you can feel less guilty about your music habits? These things. These are some good things.

We've rarely needed the nourishment more.... I did some recommending.

Good Bonnie Prince chat in today’s Guardian

This is a beautiful tribute.

Love that all the feeds are flooded with Lynch quotes like this right after the day that AI guy said that no one actually enjoys making music

Hard to say anything about Lynch’s influence or impact without resorting to cliche or hyperbole. Best leave it his own words.

Being immersed in a Severance rewatch has made everything feel a bit… Severency

Been rewatching Severance S1 in prep for the new run this week. Really glad we are because it turns out I've forgotten loads and loads of juicy details. Holy moly it is good. Genuinely unsettling at times, knowingly ridiculous at others. Very sad and yet extremely funny. Also the music is brilliant.

The NPR Music newsletter is not really on the web but I made this special URL so you could read my essay this week -- your knowing about Liz Pelly's new book MOOD MACHINE means that much to me shorturl.at/7rPz8 @lizpelly.bsky.social

Local #buildhollywood billboard does it again

Halfway through Severance S1 rewatch. The most surprising thing so far is how funny it is. So many jokes I missed first time, probably because I was distracted by how dark, dystopian and odd it all was.

There aren’t many endeavours that won’t be markedly improved by adding Stereolab.

This year I’m trying to stop apologising or feeling daft for my romantic optimism. Optimism isn’t just burying your head in the sand, settling into a charmed/privileged life (such as my own) and pretending everything’s great. Found this piece very moving, inspiring and… optimistic

What films or tv series have you quite enjoyed, loved even, but still never finished? I’ll start: - Welcome to Wrexham - Mad Men - Shogun - Killers of the Flower Moon - The Bear - that really good Michael J Fox doc (waiting for my wife)

Sobering but essential take on today’s “the music industry is saved!!” news

📢 PSA: If you are a Severance person there is an official Severance podcast doing a Severance S1 rewatch starting tomorrow with Severance’s Ben Stiller (@benstiller.redhour.com) and Adam Scott ahead of new Severance next week. Here is the Severance pod RSS feed feeds.megaphone.fm/severance-be...

Amazon may join Spotify in demonetizing artists on their platform. This is the exact opposite of “artist-centric” — it’s actively harmful to artists! Streaming services must be regulated and artists must be paid a fair wage. We need the Living Wage for Musicians Act now!

Music is not content. Musicians are more than content creators.

Yes please / no thank you for 2025. (I failed at much of the things on my 2024 list)
