Last night, US Judge Sweeney in Colo granted district-wide (state-wide) class habeas TRO to stop Trump from summarily removing aliens under his Alien Enemies Act proclamation. @ACLU attys had warned that, despite SCOTUS ruling, Admin won't commit to providing even 24 hrs notice. 1/2

Either the U.S. government *is* able to exert monetary and diplomatic pressure on El Salvador sufficient to produce Abrego Garcia’s release, or it isn’t. The latter would be either a bald-faced lie or a pretty stunning concession of our national impotence. The Vice President should pick one.

BIG news: potentially hundreds of thousands of people were at risk of having their humanitarian parole terminated early, starting on April 24. This saves those people from immediate terminations. However, just as under Biden, the parole will expire at two years.

USA Today dug into the history of one of the private contractors who helped make the baseless decision that Andry Hernández Romero, a gay makeup artist from Venezuela, was a gang member. Looks like the contractor—and not Andry—was the one with the suspect history: www.usatoday.com/story/news/i...

They’ll never accept it, but everyone who cast a vote for Donald Trump did real, generations-long damage to the United States and the west in exchange for essentially nothing of value.

I mean, two Jack Ryans told us not to elect the guy.

Starting to think that we should sort out a general agreement on trade and tariffs, perhaps housed under some sort of world trade organization. Let's keep the region strong with some kind of of north american free trade agreement. Perhaps a trans pacific partnership could soften China's influence.

(man douses himself with lighter fluid) (man shoots off a Roman candle to “fuck up the neighbors” but sets himself on fire) (man tries to pay out flames, spreads fire to his own garage) (man accidentally falls into swimming pool)

I'm starting a thread with the legal profession's response to President Trump's attacks on it. Please feel free to add any that I miss. I'll start with Perkins Coie's response. They have created an entire website so that we can follow along. 1/ www.perkinscoiefacts.com?gad_source=1...

@lawfare.bsky.social has a Trump litigation tracker, which is helpful in these trying times... www.lawfaremedia.org/projects-ser...

After Trump was elected the first time, there was also a lot of talk about making iPhones in the US. At the time, I co-edited the sci-fi outlet Terraform, and asked @timmaughan.bsky.social to imagine what such a future might really look like. With his permission, I'm republishing the story in full:

David does a good job outlining due process’ practical and moral components www.nytimes.com/2025/04/06/o...

I’m not familiar with the context of immigration, but he could file a Bivens suit over this, yeah?

Gotta hand it to Reuveni, who has since been put on leave by DOJ, for adhering to legal ethics. I'm sure he was given quote-unquote answers, but the answers were transparently frivolous/dishonest and he was not willing to present those to the court.

That last line sent me. #tariffs www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

well, Powell says inflation will now go up. But on the plus side that means he doesn't have to lower interest rates! www.cnbc.com/2025/04/04/p...

Also, please memorize this: "I INVOKE MY RIGHTS TO SILENCE AND COUNSEL AND WILL NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS WITHOUT MY ATTORNEY PRESENT." That, "am I free to leave?", and identifying yourself in stop-and-ID states are the only things you should ever say to police. Ever.

Great point listening to a talk by @timothysnyder.bsky.social: U.S. is making itself and its allies less powerful, which increases Russia’s relative power and influence, and brings about the multipolar world that it wants

It's only runaway inflation with a Democratic president; otherwise, it's sparkling positional gain.

This guy's entire threads account is an IP nightmare, but this one takes the cake. He's so proud of feeding content to AI. #IPLaw #IPLawSky #LawSky #Law www.threads.net/@sachinkamat...

As of Friday, there have been 46 cases in which federal judges have blocked Trump policies. The rulings in those cases have come from 39 different judges appointed by 5 different presidents (of both parties) to 11 different district courts across 7 different circuits. Maybe it's not the judges?

Ask Marco Rubio about the detention of this Cuban national.

Can we please remember that John Adams literally represented the Redcoats who did the Boston Massacre. Like, if you’re going to wave the goddamn flag and say that lawyers ought not to represent clients you disagree with or who are allegedly guilty, then you’re just confused about American lawyers.

So, Wednesday afternoon I did probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I gave my notice. Friday, May 2, will be my last day of federal employment after nearly 15 years. I’m hanging my own shingle. I’ll be working on federal employment law, government contracts, and appeals. Call me.

Given this administration’s utter contempt for neurodivergent or disabled people, they’d likely see this as even more reason.

So it turns out Pete Hegseth lied. And Michael Waltz lied. And Tulsi Gabbard lied. And also lied to Congress while under oath. And John Ratliffe lied. And also lied to Congress while under oath. And as ever Jeffrey Goldberg and the Atlantic were telling the truth. This is why journalism matters.

Was just reading John Quincy Adams' oral arguments before SCOTUS in the Amistad case and this part seems, uh, pretty relevant

Finland and Denmark have issued official warnings to their trans citizens from traveling to the US. This follows Germany issuing a similar warning. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/m...

We have arrived at the point where Iran’s supreme leader is critical of the Trump Admin’s record on civil liberties and human rights.

Okay, I wrote a longer thing about @durbin.senate.gov, @amyklobuchar.com, @klobuchar.senate.gov, @whitehouse.senate.gov, @blumenthal.senate.gov apparently wanting to hand Donald Trump a huge weapon with which to censor online speech. www.techdirt.com/2025/03/21/d...

It's not just you! Bluesky is having trouble with image uploads (including link previews) right now

Walz: "I think we have to assume the very worst in everything this administration does, and we need to prepare for it."

Excellent statement from a number of Con Law scholars--including some notably conservative ones--on the government's funding cutoff at Columbia/ www.nybooks.com/online/2025/...

I know a lot of people are traveling right now, and CUNY Clear has created an amazing know your rights resource on how to protect yourself while traveling in this moment (they also a ton of other valuable KYR resources on their site) www.cunyclear.org/know-your-ri...

This guy is so far gone: “‘He [Trump] didn’t create the system, but he does have an opportunity to improve it,’ Bartell said. ‘Hopefully, all this attention will bring to light how broken it is.’” Where do you think the attention is coming from, Skippy???

Here's an expert saying that "constitutional crisis" isn't the right term **because it doesn't go far enough.** "The president is asserting dictatorial power and ‘constitutional crisis’ doesn’t capture the gravity of the situation.” www.nytimes.com/2025/03/19/u...

It’s the 62nd anniversary of Gideon v. Wainwright, a case in which SCOTUS ruled that states must provide legal counsel to indigent defendants. To all public defenders: Thank you for your important, grueling, and often thankless work to protect the rights of the accused.

I suspect there are at least a few conservative legal types out there thinking about whether all/most/some of it might worth it to overrule Humphrey’s Executor and I feel obliged to observe that no it is not, what is wrong with you
