Incredible news on TDOV. The 9th Circuit has denied the government’s request to enforce its transgender military ban. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

NEW: Internal staff email from Smithsonian secretary Lonnie Bunch addressing Trump’s executive order. “As always, our work will be shaped by the best scholarship, free of partisanship, to help the American public better understand our nation’s history, challenges and trumphs.”

happy friday

“My name is Mahmoud Khalil and I am a political prisoner.” www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

It's not often that you get as concise a portrait of total failure and malevolence as Chuck Schumer's been giving us over the past few days. He is the walking embodiment of the collaborationist catastrophe that is the current Democratic Party. www.discourseblog.com/p/fuck-schumer

On this #stpatricksday, listening to this classic rendition of Whiskey in the Jar by Thin Lizzy. Hands down my favorite recording of it. Phil Lynott sings it with such passion. youtu.be/UviREczpKwE?...

An amazing speech that speaks to our moment and the need to resist fascism.

19-20 months from now, Trump will have pushed the economy off a cliff and left the civil service a smouldering husk. If you're a Democratic elected and you think a government shutdown from a CR fight is gonna be the thing voters remember, you need your fucking head examined.

I listened to the new @gavinnewsom.bsky.social podcast, which features him making nice with rightwing provocateurs With its forced bonhomie, it felt like being stuck at a bad office party He really should stick to his job. Ya know, the one he was elected to do www.latimes.com/politics/sto...

A year ago I came across this image in the August 21, 1937 issue of Newsweek Magazine of Americans who travelled from the U.S. to Berlin to meet Hitler. You can see the American flag and several state names in the background. I have always found it disturbing, but today it seems more haunting.

Absolutely horrifying. Trump and his cronies are really telling us that the Constitution is to them nothing but a scrap of paper. What is happening to Mahmoud Khalil right now should concern everyone.

Had the pleasure to interview Karen Inouye about her latest book on Nikkei Canadian activist Mary Kitagawa, who played a role in Canadian redress, for @discovernikkei.bsky.social Check it out!

On #internationalwomensday, check out this story on Suma Sugi, one of the first Asian American woman lobbyist who worked with Congress. As I discovered, she led the first @jacl-national.bsky.social campaign to repeal the Cable Act. discovernikkei.org/en/journal/2...

Happening right now: protest outside of Tesla dealership in #sacramento near Arden.

Proud to have written my latest article on private bills and immigration for @newrepublic.com. Check it out!

Sadly a great example of the phrase “you reap what you sow.” Additionally, the Border Patrol/ICE have been explicitly targeting farm workers in the Central Valley for raids, leading the ACLU and UFW to sue DHS.

Hell yeah Al Green.

#Gaza: Doctors Without Borders strongly denounces Israel’s announcement to block aid into Gaza. Humanitarian aid should never be used as a tool of war. Regardless of negotiations between warring parties, people in Gaza still need an immediate and massive scale-up of humanitarian supplies.

Beyond moved by generosity of writers & scholars like @jonrvh88.bsky.social: "Not only does Slater recount the biographies of two important labor activists, but also presents a beautiful story about a family that endured prejudice, separation, and hardship while remaining true to their principles.”🙏

While history offers many comparisons to Trump’s isolationism (America First in the 1930s), Trump’s behavior yesterday was so uniquely disgraceful that few moments compare to it. Zelenskyy, however, showed a rare form of courage and resolve unmatched by others in the room.

Hey, you bring up a good point. If you called or contacted your member in the run-up to this vote, give them a call tomorrow to express your gratitude and offer encouragement. Positive reinforcement is clutch; and it's something the Elons of the world don't comprehend.

Several years ago I learned about the work of Ernesto Galarza from Tomás Summers Sandoval @pomonacollege.bsky.social. Today I am proud to now share my latest story about Galarza’s connection to the city of Sacramento for @sacbee.com. Check it out! www.sacbee.com/opinion/op-e...

Interesting, given all the recent articles claiming Trump “flipped” the court

Chris Murphy: "My prediction is that if you vote for Kash Patel, more than any other confirmation vote you make, you will come to regret this one to your grave."

Facts. 14 percent of construction workers in the U.S. are immigrants (per American Immigration Council). All workers deserve the right to organize and fair wages regardless of citizenship status.

Every union should be echoing this statement.

At least KING 5 News got an answer out of the Pike Place Market Foundation @pikeplacemarketfdn.bsky.social. They're scared and bending a knee. See their statement: www.king5.com/article/news...

"Box by box, the Nicaraguans who milk the cows and clean the pens on WI's dairy farms, who wash dishes at its restaurants and fill lines on its factory floors, are sending home their most prized possessions, bracing for the impact of ... mass deportations." www.propublica.org/article/immi...

Happy to announce the publication of my article with California History "A Circus in Tulare." As I discovered, various members of Congress, like Rep. Alfred Elliott of Tulare, actively supported the incarceration of Japanese Americans from his district during WWII. online.ucpress.edu/ch/article/1...

As the descendant of #Nikkei farmers, it was an honor to work on this piece covering the Kansha History Project, speaking with founder and director @amandameikim.bsky.social

Check out my latest for @discovernikkei.bsky.social! I wrote about Frank Nobuo Hirosawa, a Japanese American chemist who studied the guayule shrub at Manzanar. He later worked with Cal Tech’s Arie Jan Haagen-Smit on studying LA’s smog, and their research shaped the California Air Resources Board.

That’s my auntie. When Japanese Americans talk about intergenerational trauma, we mean it. www.kqed.org/news/1202191...

I wrote about the course correction liberals should make in Trump’s second term newrepublic.com/post/190337/...

Can a headline alone be eligible for a Pulitzer?

excellent thread

An important history to remember especially at this time, especially as communities are rebuilding their lives after the fires.

An important read on how the destruction of journalism has affected people in serious ways. Watching the fires in LA unfold has been heartbreaking and shows how tech companies have gutted journalism and journalists need more support. And yes, I still can’t figure out the purpose of LA Times studios.

Late post, but I had the great pleasure earlier this month of writing this piece on the Ninth Circuit Court for the @newrepublic.com. Thanks also to @jackchin.bsky.social for providing his take on the court.

One of my favorite pieces that I have written. Thanks to @thenation.com and @jackmirkinson.bsky.social for sharing my work!

Proud to have contributed an article on director Marcel Ophuls and his childhood experiences in Los Angeles for the latest issue of Cineaste Magazine. Check it out!

Check out my latest for Discover Nikkei on the political career of George Outland! Aside from outlining his role at the Bretton Woods Conference, I talk about his reaction to anti-Japanese protests on the West Coast in 1945 and his own efforts to save a Japanese immigrant from deportation.
