Drawing a line from the Royal College of Art to the heart of Early Learning. It turns out there’s nothing ‘child’s play’ about child’s play.

Oysters have such a great attitude don’t they!

My colleagues thought your opening thoughts were an inspiration. They loved Zoi’s mathematical daily routines & Robin’s wonderful explorations of block play. I walk my dog around the harbour & what do I see? An upside down house with people inside enjoying its dissonance and rotational challenge! 😂

Beautiful isn’t it! The gorgeous balance is achieved through exploring compositional collage. The children are taught to cut up drawings / prints & move the pieces around the composition until it looks great. The process develops a compositional ‘eye.’ Below is another child’s drawing ‘mid flow’ -

In answer to your original question ~ I would campion anything that had the ‘imperfections’ and ‘beauty’ of something physical and made by a human hand. But AI may catch up with that!

Yes 🙌 There’s something Darwinian about this - how do we adapt, change and respond to this profound change… I don’t have an answer!

Hi Darrell - Yes 🙌 I’m yet to formulate my thoughts here, however it’s not something we can dodge, we are entering an existential change here… What I am thinking is that human creativity is ‘hard won’ and of course concrete… the question maybe is ‘How do we tell?’ which is of course existential?

That’s great - it took a few moments to see the drawing is made from pencils - making it even better. Love the ‘out of line pencil’ - it’s somehow really important… Love it!

Yes ~ the heart is telling isn’t it - part of a growing repertoire of symbols. The play with ideas, images and letters is filled with joy. If we, as educators, try to understand the anatomy of that joy and how it propels learning we’re ’on to something’ - right? Thanks 🙏 so much for the reply!
