On @bingereadingbooks.bsky.social this month, we talk about the AMAZING Strange The Dreamer by Laini Taylor. Here's a snippet -- come check it out! LINK: bingereadingbookclub.com

Say it after me: Chat GPT is not a search engine. It does not scan the web for information, it just generates statistically likely sentences. You cannot use it a search engine, or as a substitute for searching. Now. Please never use an LLM for information searches ever again.

Several writing friends who were rejected from this year’s WorldCon could not understand why. They are bestselling authors who made their applications in good time and were well-qualified to be included in the line up. Now we know.

After weeks of research, I’ve finally broken ground on the new novel last night and earlier this morning before work. Very pleased to finally be writing prose again, but a switch in pace to write a historical era in a real setting I’ve never been to, even as a tourist. Got my work cut out for me!

I’m buying Canadian 🇨🇦

Big advocate of this.

Every bowl of ramen I make, I try and slowly improve some aspect of it. I’ve been stuck for months on how to get the noodles neatly sitting in the bowl instead of being a tangled mess, and after watching some Japanese shop videos, I finally got the noodles looking closer to how I want it 🍜

Newsletter: I am sick and god damn tired of everybody pretending that generative AI is the next big thing. The media is complicit in accepting fantastical nonsense - both in the numbers put out by OpenAI and the silly jobs created by Anthropic - and it has to stop. www.wheresyoured.at/reality-check/

I've had enough of seeing otherwise well written longform posts on newsletters and blogs being illustrated with GenerativeAI. I've written a list of online resources which gives you access to *millions* of free-to-use images to illustrate your posts, here: www.jordanacosta.co/p/free-to-us...

A very succinct summation of why AI isn't going to be the thing they say it is. There's no road to there from where we are.

Unapologetically posting pictures of my home made ramen as I slowly work towards a bowl I’m truly proud of.

Missing my old office and being able to pick books off the shelf

After you watch Sinners, you should ̶r̶e̶a̶d̶ ̶G̶e̶o̶r̶g̶e̶ ̶R̶.̶R̶.̶ ̶M̶a̶r̶t̶i̶n̶’̶s̶ ̶e̶x̶c̶e̶l̶l̶e̶n̶t̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶u̶n̶d̶e̶r̶r̶a̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶v̶a̶m̶p̶i̶r̶e̶ ̶n̶o̶v̶e̶l̶ rewatch Sinners.

Depeche Mode are great, aren’t they?

Don't let Hustle Culture slip into and corrupt your writing mindset. Focus on hitting your word count, finishing your manuscripts, editing them, and getting them as good as you can. If you want to publish, that's a whole separate part of the job. Writing isn't a side hustle, it's way of life.

Utterly awful.

I’ve been slowly getting back into making my own ramen again and the bowl is beginning to look like what I want. Hand made noodles with a vegan miso broth, roasted tomatoes and mushrooms and stir fried broccoli. Another six months of making them and I’ll have something that I’m happy with! 🍜

I just finished The Tainted Cup by @robertjbennett.bsky.social on holiday this week in Poland — a deft and brilliantly penned mystery novel. Looking forward to reading more of the back catalogue! Anyway here’s Robert on @ukpageone.bsky.social

Writers: If you get an error opening your WIP, STOP. Do NOT attempt to open it or let your writing program run an auto repair. Close the program, and MAKE A COPY OF YOUR DOCUMENT. Open/repair the COPY ONLY. Make a new copy for each attempt. This keeps a “fix” from becoming permanent damage.

Hahahahaahahahahah “According to the Southend Echo, Johnston boarded at Tower Millennium Pier in London believing he was getting on a tourist boat, but he was soon taken under the collective wing of a group of Southend fans.” 🦐 for life @marcorinaldi.bsky.social

Another great episode of @ukpageone.bsky.social with @franceswrites.bsky.social — I wish there was more discussion and enthusiasm for cross-genre books, because as @tariqashkanani.bsky.social points out, much of the most beloved shows on streaming are cross-genre.

The Dispatch Edition #5 is now in subscribers’ inboxes! This month, I delve into editorial notes from my agent @jjbker.bsky.social, as well as my usual short reviews and more👇

I spent five years writing my first novel, Dark Century, set in a version of our history where the Global North is fought over by America, Denmark, Russia and China. I never thought the geopolitics of my setting would be so prescient during my lifetime. Link to my pitch in the comments👇

This is a brilliant book, I can’t wait to see it in the world.

These phones are mentioned in Giuliano da Empoli’s The Wizard of the Kremlin. Absolutely fascinating concept.

I can’t keep up every day with @davegoodman.bsky.social’s daily posts, but I always look forward to his monthly newsletter, the Decrypt and get a snapshot of his prodigious writing output. Dave’s one of the hardest working writers in the business, so sub to his newsletter, it’s worth your time!

Some absolutely rad artwork here. Totally up my street.
