@ltuesymposium.bsky.social day 1! Here we go!!!

And here we go… 🤬

Like many Black parents, my mother literally told us, "You'll have to work twice as hard to get half as far."

I spent over two hours watching 'Emilia Pérez,' time I will never get back, so I wrote down all my thoughts about the film. Thank you as always for your support! From penis to vagina! johnpaulbrammer.substack.com/p/all-my-tho...

My least favorite alert. NYT: BREAKING: Thing everyone knew would happen, happens exactly the way we thought it would.

My wife and I had a deep meaningful discussion because tiktok was banned for a few hours. Anybody else enjoy their free time?

Who said Trump would only get rejected when Hell froze over?

Just found about a new kind of post to scroll where instead of briefly learning 36748585857743 terrible bad things that make your stomach hurt you get to get a whole different new world in your head where people have adventures and do neat stuff idk if anyone knows about this yet it's called novels

This is your periodic reminder that: "AI" is artificial, but not currently intelligent "hallucinations" are actually incorrect or misleading output (errors) "AI" cannot "join the workforce" any more than a broken clock can When we use their marketing terms we only help them perpetuate the scam.

The authors dream

Are there any corporate mottos that have aged worse than "don't be evil" and "move fast and break things?"

The real "machines eliminating their creators and taking over the world" story we've been looking for

I heard there was a secret ooze that turned four reptiles into dudes, but you don’t really care for turtles do ya

AI is best when it expands the work of professionals already doing the work. We need human translators but we also could use a lot more translation work than our workforce could possibly make. When computer spreadsheets came out in the number of accountants exploded, let's do that business model.

Machine translation IS powerful. But it's also a blunt instrument challenged by context and tone. That's why it takes a translator and writer to get things right. It's like an F22. World's best fighter, but it still takes a highly trained pilot. You can't throw an amateur in the cockpit.

Dear Mr. Business, please stop making lotion tubes that look like toothpaste tubes. Thank you.

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

Writing is thinking. It’s not a part of the process that can be skipped; it’s the entire point.

I could see someone training a few custom layers on top of an LLM in order to communicate a really interesting idea. I promise you this would take waaaaay more work than just writing an f'n book.

Men will write a whole book rather than going to therapy. Source: Am men.

Got some tough feedback on my book yesterday. 70% daunted by the work I have to put in, 90% excited for what the book can become.
