If only 5% of our own leaders were this fucking brave.

I have never seen anything like the Trump, Vance, Zelensky 'talk;. The bullying was painful to watch. I feel for Ukraine and its people and I don't think it's possible to hate TRump and Vance more after seeing that

authoritarianism at work.

Last night's Pentagon massacre is much more than realized. Not just firing the black CJCS and first woman CNO but all the senior JAG officers and hiring a man who just joined 3 different crypto firms tied to Kushner and Thiel as Chairman. I did a deep dive into it open.substack.com/pub/fpwellma...

“That is why Trumpists are so focused on “ending DEI” in the federal workforce. They see anti-discrimination and inclusion as a ladder of upward mobility for people they do not believe should have one.”

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent. Opportunities are everywhere. Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

Well, here we go. This and the two cases of Ebola that just occurred in New York shows we are right on track for some kind of impending pandemic, with leadership that has no idea what to do. And of course we may not even know it until it hits us in the face because the CDC is basically shut down.

Wonderful to have an opportunity to discuss THE WIRE — a show which got mixed reviews and diminishing audiences but nonetheless survived to become a cultural touchstone — with Dr. Ben Lamb, author of You’re Nicked: Investigating British Television Police Series: notesonfilm1.com/2025/02/11/j...

Why do Sadler's Wells have to coerce you into contributing to their building maintenance? Does the price of ordinary tickets not cover it? Why don't they just advertise the price of the ticket as 29 instead of 25 rather than surprising you at the end with something you have no choice in?

I'd not been aware of the Serbian student uprising against corruption until a friend brought it to my attention here and it's inspiring. Also filmmaker Marco Berger against Millai in Argentina, with international marches organised in support. My feed is full of resistance.

So like, this is a hostile takeover of the US correct? When you go into the company and grab all the controls and shut everyone else out?

-1 to our first instalment of 2025! Join us tomorrow at @wshed.bsky.social to watch and discuss the #Brutalist. Meanwhile, check out this great podcast to know more about the film. See you tomorrow! (Everyone is welcome)

In spite of being joined by glamorous Stephen Glass, this is probably for hardcore fans only; we loved it so much our discussion is almost as long as the film. eavesdroppingatthemovies.com/2025/01/29/4...

Another bastion of populist cinephilia, a unique complement to London's film offerings, and such a great success by any measure, now under threat from your usual criminal developers. Why let them get away with it? I've signed: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/sa...

An interesting if ultimately unsatisfying exercise in style that we nonetheless enjoyed watching. Podcast may be listened to on link below: eavesdroppingatthemovies.com/2025/01/25/4...

Nicole's great; the film i a rather dull mess: eavesdroppingatthemovies.com/2025/01/24/4...

I first saw this amazing video essay by @barbarazecchi.bsky.social at the Women and [Spanish] Horror conference at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid last June. It blew me away! And now it’s published at Tecmerin Journal. Must watch! vimeo.com/1033549858 tecmerin.uc3m.es/project/14-1...

We discuss Pablo Larraín's Maria, my favourite of his biopics, with a transcendent Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas: eavesdroppingatthemovies.com/2025/01/23/4...

Ketamine is a hell of a drug.

“Serling was following a path laid down by writers and artists in a lot of different cultures who had more to lose than their income—including ones who were, at that very moment, being persecuted by dictators.” — I wrote about Rod Serling today. No reason. www.rogerebert.com/features/the...

Very pleased to be in this:

"This is the great discovery of the conflict entrepreneurs: what counts in politics is not how well people are doing, but how well they are doing in relation to designated out-groups." So people support a class war against themselves. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The premise of A SPY ALONE is that just as there was a Cambridge Spy ring recruited in the 30s (Burgess, Philby, Blunt), there was one in Oxford in the 90, but they weren’t caught. They were spying for ‘interests’ rather countries, and in order to serve those interests, they sparked Brexit.

Hello and welcome to our new Bluesky account!

"OptumRx, the group’s pharmacy benefit manager, along with its two main peers, Express Scripts and CVS Caremark Rx, have pocketed an extra $7.3 billion over cost thanks to price gouging, according to the findings of a report by the Federal Trade Commission." Lina Khan really is That Girl.

For those curious about the differences between the 2008 BD and 2021 World of WKW release / 2025 4k Criterion release of Chungking Express:

When friends here assert that this or that film is a masterpiece, I often think, 'Really, like Los Olvidados-level?' Screened this today and once again amazed by it. As extra food for thought, I inserted the 'baby in garbage' sequence from Emilio Fernandez's Victims of Sin.

Hundreds of Mexican firefighters have arrived in Southern California to help combat the wildfires. Thank you, Mexico🇺🇸🇲🇽

This by @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social on the terrible California fires is very good. www.rogerebert.com/mzs/whats-go...

just wanna be on the record that I’m not gonna be doing any false balance objectivity about the survival of my country and am gonna take a pretty dim view of anyone who acts that way

Deadline for applications: January 13th 2025!

Today I learned that the company providing my project’s web support has been outsourcing SEO ‘back link’ provision to a third party that’s used gen AI to create web pages and blog posts as if authored *by my project*. Not only are they factually incorrect, but also in ethical opposition to my work

The long-awaited remake of our podcast on 1922's NOSFERATU. We talk silent era colour tinting, getting bogged down in plot, whether horror needs to be scary, sex and love, and SHREK FOREVER AFTER. wp.me/p9y1IP-2sd

What's involved in being a curator and how do you become one? Paul Cuff interviews Oliver Hanley to find out. therealmofsilence.com/2025/01/06/p...

We enjoyed Nosferatu enormously, then spent most of the podcast talking about all the things that were wrong with it. eavesdroppingatthemovies.com/2025/01/06/4...

Very sorry to learn of the death of Arlene Croce, a great writer on dance and film. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/17/a...

Excellent opportunities to work on a great project with the some of the very best people.

Two culture geek moments that thrilled me today: finding out that Patricia Highsmith palled around with Judy Holliday in New York in the early 40s; and the moment in Black Doves when Keira Knightley and Sarah Lancashire exchange spy stuff at a cinema screening Brief Encounter.

I'm one of those curmudgeons that thinks the Criterion Closet videos tend to be better in concept than in execution, but Sonnenfeld's is legitimately terrific. The guy came prepared.
