Comme le rappelle Divina Frau-Meigs, l EMI est à la fois un projet pédagogique et un projet politique. Ça ne plaît pas à tout le monde mais...

"Meta is revamping a program that has paid bonuses to creators for content based on views and engagement, potentially pouring accelerant on the kind of false posts it once policed." www.propublica.org/article/face...

Excellent @pcunliffejones.bsky.social ! I am still not sure that most people are aware of IFCN @factchecknet.bsky.social and their code of principles, but it is important to know about them to really appreciate how dishonest Zuck was. Peter's work here is short and accessible and worth sharing

Our university library is now on BlueSky! Give them a follow🦋🐦

The EU Commission - the executive, with broad range of priorities - and not independent bodies with sole focus has primary responsibility for the DSA. As I told @mantzarlis.com yesterday, a risk that comes with that is "politically motivated underenforcement and watering down." Below Politico today

Worth a read To me, the two key questions are (i) whether and how far the EU goes in enforcing it, and (much harder) (ii) how far it goes in defining mis/disinformation that is "harmful". imho, most agree "harmful" is "bad" but agreeing what is "harmful" is complicated & not really attempted.

First day of the year that is warm and dry enough to inspire me to bike to a university library to work. Small moments of hope.

This graph is shocking after a year of US media and political narratives about a good economy leading into a monumental election. The multiple ways US household debt (mortgage, education, cars, health, etc) is growing is an underreported phenomenon www.cnbc.com/2025/02/13/c...

Le programme du festival européen de journalisme et EMI qui se tiendra du 27 au 29 février à Zagreb est disponible. Si vous passez vos vacances en Croatie, n'hésitez pas à venir nous voir ! voicesfestival.eu/event-new/

I finally saw some reporting on this attack in my neighborhood. www.humanite.fr/societe/anti...

One advantage to the current political moment is that it brings into focus larger power structures that are typically invisible or mystified. A billionaire-owned media system is a policy failure and a threat to democracy.

Although so much has happened in the past month, this article by @jfarkas.bsky.social and @aurelmondon.bsky.social is still an important read. Reflecting on why the clear warnings were ignored and by who are an essential first steps to build a resistance. bylinetimes.com/2025/01/26/t...

new from me: Elon Musk's X appears to be blocking links to directly contact users on Signal Signal, the encrypted messaging app, has recently become a major tool for government workers looking to blow the whistle on DOGE

Looks like even "political" is a forbidden word the USA 🤔

Usually annoyed by national zeitgeisty articles on if Portland Is Back Or Not, but really love today's addition to the genre featuring Winta Yohannes, @chrissmith.us, @jonathanmaus.bsky.social, @apanoaf.bsky.social's Duncan Hwang, @andersem.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

Aurelien's article is a worthy read for those defending liberalism or democracy. Many of these points are especially important for academics and journalists who study disinformation. You don't have to agree, but this critique, even if uncomfortable, can lead to constructive reflection.

So much obeying in advance...

Et le tien, d’abonnement @lesjours.fr, il commence quand ? Lisez, soutenez, faites aimer les médias indépendants, ces remèdes à l’emmerdification du monde !

“This corrupt dangerous buffoon obviously should be removed from office with the legal authorities at our disposal to do so for the immediate safety and health of our community” should not be considered a radical thing for a politician to say, and yet

Changes at the EU DSA: “a strong signal that the EU is committed to enforcing its laws despite threats and pressures from abroad, but the actual enforcement is key to evaluate if the Code’s objectives are met” - @cjimenezcruz.bsky.social efcsn.com/news/2025-02...

A great feature about @bsky.app is custom feeds. My favorite is Mutuals which I go to first each time. If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend it.

It is a shame that this ALC article is paywalled and won't be read widely. It is an "obituary" for an NYT columnist that is full of beautiful, burning descriptions of a "far center" which dominates too much of liberal intelligentsia. nymag.com/intelligence...

youtu.be/rRq14ZBYwus?... Watched this @majorityreport.bsky.social interview last night and it gives a lot of insight on what the tech oligarchs are doing. @gilduran.com has been reporting on this stuff for a while and even I thought he was a bit over the top before the past month.

the CFPB that Musk wants to shut down has won $21 billion for Americans from predatory financial institutions and big banks quick, does anyone know if $21 billion is more than $711 million

I get why so many people hate paper straws. Many are very bad quality, but there are other options than plastic... or there could be standards of quality put on paper straws. I know this isn't really the concern of Trump, but it annoys me how much this will resonate even with non-Trumpists.

While more tech companies race to the bottom to kiss Trump's ass, they manage to finally show the public what us internet scholars have been shouting for years - that technology is never neutral or objective and is motivated by political and mainly capitalistic motives.

as Colin Crouch points out, 'actually existing' neoliberalism is devoted to the dominance of public life by the corporation now more than ever, we need to challenge the comfortable accommodation that exists between the state, market and corporate interests

The corporate coup is global. Trump's mad tariffs do not mark the end of neoliberalism or free trade or whatever you want to call it. They mark the end game of what we have been fighting for decades: corporate rule. They do not believe in the public. They believe in their wealth.

"We are dedicating our company to the service of the West and the United States of America, and we’re super-proud of the role we play, especially in places we can’t talk about. Palantir is here to disrupt. And, when it’s necessary, to scare our enemies and, on occasion, kill them.”

From what I can tell, the best reporting on what’s actually happening in / being done to the US government is from @nathantankus.bsky.social and @wired.com Good on them, but it’s a poor reflection on better resourced publishers.

Yesterday a 🇻🇳 friend was asking me about what I thought was happening. I described something similar ⬇️. He said it was shocking. I laughed deeply which confused him. I apologized saying feels shocking but it has been a long time coming and it is so scary I need to laugh for courage.

This.

It’s uncomfortable to hear but this thread is very important to think about. Especially point 4.
