@phkraemer.bsky.social Yikes. You know that people have gone way too far into the "AI is the appropriate tool to solve every problem" mindset when it's literally being used to solve itself.

@WarnerCrocker What makes it even more futile is that he has successfully branded fact checkers as illegitimate partisans in the eyes of his followers, those who most need to understand his lies

Update. "Defend Scientific Freedom and Integrity Against Political Suppression." https://www.change.org/p/defend-scientific-freedom-and-integrity-against-political-suppression I just signed this petition and hope you will too. "We call on governments, funding bodies, academic institutions […]

[US politics] @TMRuppert But all the "shrink the government" people will be convinced that this was a massive attack on government waste and abuse regardless. I think that's really the point is that destroying all these things gives them a way to claim that they found all sorts of problems and […]

[Politics] @davidho I agree that Trump has long aimed to consolidate all power in his own hands. He's very clearly an authoritarian who wants the US to work like Russia. However, I don't think all the stepping up in the world would do any good *right now*. I don't see any way out of this […]

Je voudrais des boutons pour d'autres places dans le #Fediverse, mais #JetPack les offre pas encore. Allez enfin, JetPack!

@ZhiZhu @dangillmor I'd argue that one of the reasons the press is not willing to do that is because it feeds into Trump's fascist campaign to convince Americans that the press is biased and doesn't report the truth. It's impossible to win at this point as the more they tell the truth in plain […]

@thekitmalone I had the same thought. "DEI" is convenient for racists because, as an acronym, they can work to associate it with whatever they want. "Diversity", "equity", and "inclusion" are words that are hard to redefine as something sinister

So, to get to the actual primary data, this information had to pass from Tansey/Sterkx to Schweninger to Gehman to Susberry, and the message was already distorted by the time it got to Gehman whose book is, by the way, cited 132 times as of today according to Google Scholar.

And this #citationhole goes deeper. The laws that Gehman (1994) described were not mentioned at all in the works she cited. Blassingame (1973) and Tregle (1992) didn't talk about any laws. Schweninger (1989) described different laws and cited Tansey (1981) and Sterkx (1972). These two finally […]

@petersuber Either way, I don't think his decision will have anything to do with careful analysis of what's best for the American people

@wjmaggos @mmasnick.bsky.social @pluralistic It seems like more people who join Bluesky are bridging to here, but I really wish they would just join a Fediverse instance somewhere instead. Bluesky does not give me much confidence that they're not simply heading down the same path as all the […]

From Johnston (1970): "A decision of the Louisiana courts in 1832 declared that the decisions of the courts of France were no longer binding as they affect the m****to offspring of white men and that it has been found necessary to pass many restrictive acts to protect white 'heirs from the too […]

From Rogers (1970): "In 1832, the Louisiana courts declared that the old French laws and decisions were no longer binding. It was found necessary, says James H. Johnston, to pass many restrictive acts to protect, as was said white 'heirs from too great fondness of the natural parents' of […]
