Sure, of course. And if you used it to commit a crime and the cops were super invested in finding you, there would be that. But if you wanted to avoid having calls to a reporter show up in a call log associated with your name, this is an easy way.

There are a few who are protected by judge's orders in other suits, but by my count, that still leaves 5 at risk. I'm told the trans man is currently being transferred.

BOP has housed 22 trans women in federal women’s prisons and 1 trans man in a men’s prison — fewer than 0.02% of federal prisoners. Yet this tiny group of people has been the subject of intense focus from DOJ officials since President Trump took office. www.themarshallproject.org/2025/02/21/t...

Late this afternoon, attorneys filed emergency paperwork to stop this round of transfers. But they fear that unless they name each woman one by one, administration officials will keep pushing the transfers as much as they can. www.courtlistener.com/docket/69593...

“It’s humiliating. It’s devastating. They would destroy her. She’s really beautiful. She doesn’t look anything like a man," said the mother of one of the women slated for transfer. "I’m sure she’ll be raped.” www.themarshallproject.org/2025/02/21/t...

Since there were only 3 plaintiffs, Trump officials appear to have seized on this small change to transfer all the remaining transgender women housed in women’s prisons to men’s prisons — even those who have already had gender confirmation surgery. www.themarshallproject.org/2025/02/21/t...

This week, the judge affirmed that earlier order, and sided, again, against the Trump administration, ordering the prison system not to enforce the order. But there was a slight change in wording. This time, the judge said "against plaintiffs."

..and says "this Court must intervene to put a stop to the madness." He's been incarcerated for 7+ years for "the most technical of technical [parole] violations": ordered to make an appt, he called, but didn't hear back from doc in time. Hear the whole story: www.themarshallproject.org/violation

Just heard from another recently-retired top BOP administrator who said re: this directive, "Well that is terrifying. I assure you BOP staff have no training relevant to any of this. I don't even know what to say."

GTL is part of a $1.4 billion industry that charges incarcerated people exorbitant rates and fees to stay in touch with their loved ones, all under the guise of advancing rehabilitation and maintaining connections to community. www.prisonpolicy.org/phones/state...

This is not like showing your ID at the gate before a prison visit. This is sending all your personal information via the web to GTL, which acknowledges on its own website that they had a major data breach a few years ago.

Today I tried to message someone in prison in Ohio and before I could the system required me to send a photo of my ID—again, with my home address. I refuse to do that, which makes it a lot harder for me to do my job and stay in touch with people.

Add to that, a hiring freeze that Trump instituted on his first day in office. "We barely have enough employees for our own joints and they gonna pull resources probably for bus runs" one pissed-off CO told me.

Nevermind that the bureau is so plagued by understaffing (and the low morale it causes) that they can barely run their own ship.

She will get out next year with enough money in her pocket to fund the gender-affirming surgery she has fought so hard to get, a nest egg to start a new life—whatever she wants. BOP is still holding her in isolation, tho, so I can't talk to her about it. www.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

Now, just days before the inauguration of a man whose campaign ads mocked his opponent for promising to provide gender-affirming care to prisoners (which btw the law requires), Grace has settled all her outstanding cases. www.themarshallproject.org/2025/01/24/t...

During that time, she has proven to be an adept self-taught lawyer, suing her jailers over 100 times. The more she lost, the better she became at fighting, until, finally, she stopped losing so much. Last year, she took two cases to trial, and won both. www.themarshallproject.org/2024/11/13/t...
