I've gone full #Quarto and moved my website from wordpress to github (jmpinasanchez.github.io). I'm not finished moving all the content though, so any feedback is welcome.

There were already several reasons to boycott the US (eg worlds top per capita polluter, small arms manufacturer, etc.), but its support for genocidal leaders like Netanyahu and Putin puts it in a unique category of evil. Like, is there anyone in the UN supporting both Russia and Israel?

Ever wondered how measurement error sneaks into Social Science research, and what can we do about it? No? Well, now you can hear me wierdly ramble about it for 7 whole minutes 🎤🫠: socialresearchmethods.leeds.ac.uk/methods-clips/

So when does the pressure to move the location of the next Olympics and World Cup begin?

This feels like a real landmark, seeing the problem of penal populism confronted explicitly gives me hope. One point that still worries me is the view expressed that the process of sentence inflation is entirely artificial. We find that for many offence groups it isn't. bsky.app/profile/jpin...

Does anyone else see a lack of clarity in many social science studies about what factors are omitted variables (and should be controlled for) and what factors are mechanisms (which should not)?

Penal populism has broken Britain’s prisons. My piece for @newstatesman.com on why our addiction to longer sentences is unsustainable. www.newstatesman.com/politics/soc...

New preprint with Ian Brunton-Smith! rpubs.com/jmpinasanche... "What is the external validity of sentencing research? A multi-level meta-analysis of #race and #gender #disparities" This one might be of interest to #Sentencing and #MetaScience researchers.

NEW: Explosive new revelations from ex MI6 spy. Why *did* Boris Johnson block the publication of the Russia Report before 2019 Gen Election? Finally some answers.. Russian military intelligence - the GRU - targeted the Brexit vote. "Money changed hands" 1/ podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/f...

Some context for what that kind of drop looks like. That's the lowest US score since the Civil War + a 1-year drop of that size puts us in the same company as events like Belarus's 1995 coup (though not as bad as Gambia in 1994 or Thailand in 2006) #rstats code here: gist.github.com/andrewheiss/...

I've just signed up for aquagym classes at my local swimming pool - where the average member is probably 70 years old - and I don’t even feel completely embarrassed about it. #NormaliseFeelingLikeShitInYourEarly40s

#Criminologists, #LegalResearchers, it is going to look very weird if we end up being the last to do the right thing.

JD Vance… Please report to Sociology 101.

📢 The Call for Proposals deadline has been extended by one week! Proposals are due by 23:59 GMT on Friday, 14 Feb. We are accepting proposals for virtual pre-conference symposia, in-person panel sessions, and talks or posters on any topic related to metascience: metascience.info/call-for-pro...

Today I spoke alongside an excellent panel of speakers about the role of research and universities in sexual violence prevention, and the partnership work we are doing to foster safer parks through sector guidance and active bystander training spotlight.leeds.ac.uk/anna-barker/

Are you tired of analyzing your nominal and ordinal variables like its the 1950s? Then read @sociologicalsci.bsky.social today and see if ME inequality and total ME are right for you. We develop new methods for summarizing effects for nominal/ordinal independent and dependent variables.

A little heads-up on some findings from a paper I'm working on with @drsamjlewis.bsky.social , looking at ethnic disparities in CPS charging decisions. No matter which region you look at, white British individuals always appear better off. We should have a preprint ready in a few weeks.

"The most abundant nanoplastic was tyre particles (41%), then polystyrene (28%) and polyethylene (12%). Each tyre on the world’s 1.6bn vehicles can lose 4kg during its lifetimes and may be the largest source of tiny plastic pollution."

New study finds Registered Reports have lower citation counts than non-Registered Reports doi.org/10.1037/amp0...

New paper from us: ijpds.org/article/view... comparing self-reported and police-detected violence over adolescence and early adulthood. tl;dr we undercount violence with both methods and the people missing from the self-report are probably the ones committing the most violence.

“I never would have imagined it was this high. I certainly don’t feel comfortable with this much plastic in my brain, and I don’t need to wait around 30 more years to find out what happens if the concentrations quadruple” says Prof Matthew Campen, senior author of the study 👇

"[...] and clearly the profits of the major commercial publishers and pointless proliferation of outputs, tagged as growth, is an increasingly intolerable waste in this system."
