Definitely read @cassmannes.bsky.social's newsletter on this. If I picked up a book and saw a blurb from the author's post man? I'm spending much more time considering that book than if it has another blurb from George Saunders (I love you, George).

The decision to offload responsibility for blurbs to authors reflects a larger trend of publishers deflecting responsibility. Publishers should not do this. We should put ourselves behind our books and authors to the extent that we share the burden across the board, including with blurbs.

Gabe Habash's STEPHEN FLORIDA, a novel about a college wrestler rapidly approaching the end of his collegiate career (and, in turn, the end of his life as he's imagined it), and spiraling. It's dark, it's funny, it's one of the best character portraits I've read, and it has a God-tier first page.
