It’s got really strong hard scifi concepts throughout and will leave you feeling relief that you live in the simple, uncomplicated present and not the horrors of the future

Have you read Peter Watts’ BlindSight!?? That book is amazing, and short! Under 300 pages. An alien invasion (sort of) by a non conscious non sentient entity (maybe) where the fact finding mission is led by a genetically engineered human predator and a fascinating but exceedingly troubled crew

Are you looking for cozy or existential cosmic horror?

Yeah I mean the war was certainly the grandest misunderstanding but book 3 and 4 focused a lot on the space race and the misunderstandings that compounded from the bad politics from Mospheira

Maybe in the first book briefly? I mostly remember their superstitions about numbers stopped them from using computers and refusing air traffic control leading to multiple midair collisions and pilots just going on vibes

Haha uh no? Was that like the Romans or something?

But also it’s worth noting there are plenty of valid reasons to not like the foreigner series! I’m not saying it’s the best thing out there or anything

It is a little golden age scifi, except that the depth of character is unrivaled. A lot of golden age had some pretty thin characters, meat puppets really, but not CJ Cherryh

I’m super curious about what obstacle you ran into in foreigner that turned you off of it?

But yes it does take the court intrigue to 11 and I don’t know there’s just something so FASCINATING about the way the stories are constructed I can’t get over it

If you read dune and you thought to yourself, I could really go for the cozy version of this where Duke Leto just ends up in political administration as planned and everything that matters happens over tea, then this one’s for you.
Also if you love like, conceptual xeno-anthropology and 7ft aliens

I have honestly only read the foreigner series, but the first book is absolutely fascinating and if you love it you may be tempted to continue on with it.
I started Cyteen but haven’t made it too far

I have a hard time recommending this to anyone because well, there’s 25 books in the series, and they’re all 500-600 pages long. It’s dense court intrigue and vivid interiority. Just not the sort of thing I can confidently point you towards without knowing your interests intimately~

You have to be careful to avoid adjectives like itchy and allergenic and eye-watering when describing the cats lest your voice bleed through

Heyyyy when the bookstore thinks your book is good that’s high praise! One would assume they read ALOT of high quality titles in a year

You’d be surprised sometimes birds do smack you square in the face. They’re clumsier than we assume! Especially ducks and geese haha

Oh no way, as in lasers represent another form of high energy but in a controlled, non-kinetic state of light, which is why it’s a narrow beam?
comment in response to

This is super interesting and the paper does a good job of explaining it, if you’re at a maximum energy pressure, it’s no longer potential because it can’t be converted to kinetic. I wonder if we’ll see practical applications for this in energy storage and conversion. Batteries, even?

Amazing! I have yet to experience this, but it’ll happen any day now 🤞, I feel like for my first one I’ll run out into the street and yell, “I’m published! I’m published!” Like Chevy Chase in an 80’s family comedy

So you’ve discovered that waiting in the car service depot with the hiccups is, overall, a modestly appropriate time to write?
