The post-pandemic anti-incumbent wave strikes again

Trump is trying to do two separate things: 1.) become an authoritarian leader, and 2.) implement a massively unpopular policy program. These goals conflict with each other and are hopefully self sabotaging in the end. 1x

as in interstate war, the most intractable conflicts are those which are over an indivisible resource or asset -- in this case, the question of "who is in charge of FBI employees, Kash or Elon?"

At some point, Trump has to decide who is running our government. Musk - who according to the White House is just an advisor - or the actual appointed leaders of agencies, who in many cases are telling federal employees not to respond to DOGE/OPM emails.

WaPo Page One: “If you’re going to just yell at me, that’s not going to be an effective town hall,” McCormick said .. “But we’re pissed!” a woman shouted. #GA07 www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

These town halls are giving post-2008 vibes. Also providing lots of material for class!

Re-upping this: beware of disinformation accounts.

I am looking to hire a post-doctoral researcher to work with me in a project on social cleavages and political party competition in Europe: lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/... Happy to answer any questions, and thanks in advance for circulating the call!

Made myself a nice Canadiano today to get me through my lecture

It would be great if the Secretary of HHS understood basic science instead of peddling conspiracies and suing folks.

I talked about this in lecture in the context of the global anti-incumbent wave. Student: Is some of this because of Trump’s antagonism? Me: I mean… probably isn’t helping

The Dept. of Political Science at OU is hiring the Henry Bellmon Chair of Public Service, an endowed tenured position in public administration at the rank of associate or full professor. I know little about the position but am happy to answer questions about OU and Norman apply.interfolio.com/163547

Nobody laughed at my Mean Girls reference in class today. Truly devastating.

That’s not how any of that works…

Firings happening right now at the NSF.

How do you learn which are the right questions?

Sending up a little prayer to the coffee gods this morning to help me get through this R&R

In the coming weeks, a lot of slow-on-the uptake folks are going to begin belatedly realizing Trump is both an inept moron and a dangerous autocrat. Our great civic challenge in these trying times will be calmly welcoming them aboard instead of primal-screaming in their faces.
