Hi All, Just sent out a piece about a great failure of strategic leadership. European leaders failed to see Trump for what he is, but instead tried to make him what they wanted him to be. Thankfully, Ukrainian resistance has given them valuable time to make this up open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

A good step for those who want to prepare themselves intellectually for the move towards a war economy in Europe would be to read “The Price of Peace” by Zach Carter. Reading Keynes' contributions to the financing of a war economy should dampen ambitions to cut social spending.

The Iowa GOP advanced a bill making it a misdemeanor for a healthcare provider to administer a Covid vaccine. Even when a person has requested a Covid vaccine.

Republican support for same-sex marriage down 31pts, from 55% to 24%, in four years according to new poll from YouGov. Yikes.

Trump claimed the Biden administration spent $8 million "making mice transgender." The White House tried to back up this number with records of funding for research into cancer, asthma, and HIV, some of which used *transgenic* (genetically modified) mice.

Well Europe, time to take a deep breath, hitch up your pants, roll up your sleeves, and do everything you can to help Ukraine. No one else will. Its not only their freedom on the line--its yours too.

Large amounts of ketamine can make anyone feel like they rule the world. When should Americans start worrying about Elon Musk’s regular use? @shaylalove.bsky.social reports:

Joe Rogan has Ian Carroll, a literal Neo Nazi, on his show today. Before you respond glibly with “what’s new?” A big difference between someone who believes in some racist ideology and a Neo Nazi who spreads most dangerous rhetoric/conspiracies. Neither ok — but Neo Nazis are much more dangerous.

If you enact the Trump tax cuts and then try to balance the budget by the end of Trump's term - but want to protect Social Security, Medicare, vets, and defense - it would mean cutting the rest of the government nearly 90%. If you tried to also spare Medicaid, it makes it mathematically impossible.

I don't know who this guy is but he's absolute right.

I have no idea what Trump’s relationship is with the Russian government. However if the Russians were able to place an agent at the top of the US government, that agent would be hard pressed to do more damage to US society and international relationships than Trump is doing now.

MASSIVE FISCAL PACKAGE OUT OF BERLIN: 12-20%+ of GDP. - 500 billion fund for public investment - All defence spending above 1% of GDP not counted for debt brake. - Federal states can borrow 0.35% p.y. for investment. Germany is back - economically and militarily. 1/x

ahhhhhhhhhh

This is Marco Rubio explaining how the USA promised to defend Ukraine forever if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal left after the Soviet Union fell. This is why lil marco was sinking into the couch. He was hoping we wouldn’t find it…so don’t RT right now this very second.

Let's not that Musk went on Joe Rogan and repeated his claim that he believes the entirety of Social Security is itself a fraud and should be abolished. He's also lying about pervasive fraud within the system which clearly means he plans to stop millions of people checks.

www.nytimes.com/2025/03/01/o... “America has been experiencing what economists described as a historically tight labor market, with a national unemployment rate of just 4 percent. And all the while, homelessness has soared to the highest level on record.”

This is the most right wing newspaper in the UK. Extraordinary.

Horrific: One of the USAID programs Trump just terminated was set to deliver lifesaving treatment to hundreds of thousands of starving kids abroad. Much of it is now sitting in a Georgia warehouse. Rubio's promise to preserve urgent assistance was a lie. New piece: newrepublic.com/article/1921...

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program invites graduate students from abroad to come study in the US and guarantees funding for them to do so paid in a monthly stipend. Yesterday, some FFSP scholars received notification that they're only getting a week of their stipend.

Hard right parties have now surpassed the Conservatives and Social Democrats in European democracies in terms of average vote share.

The regression of productivity in low-income countries over the last decade pushes them further and further away from the rest of the world economy. Subscribe for more insight from Chartbook: tinyurl.com/mpeffaxe.

Every news outlet reporting Elon Musk's comment about accidentally canceling Ebola prevention efforts and quickly restoring them should also say they haven't been restored, they're still canceled, the outbreak-fighting teams are dismantled, the money is gone www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

That’s a beauty. 💕 @wutangforchildren.bsky.social

How could that Trump voter have believed electing him would make IVF free? She must've been into fringey alternative media, maybe saw it from some influencer, professional media outlets would never oh no.

Air traffic controllers are required by law to retire at 56. It is a high-stress, high-intensity job that requires intense focus. The retirement rules are there to keep us all safe. This fucking guy has no clue what's he's doing.

No one had died of measles in America for ten years, until yesterday. That 2015 death in WA was preceded by a 12y period of no US deaths. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt... HHS Secretary RFK Jr. says it’s “not unusual.” apnews.com/article/meas... It is unusual. www.cdc.gov/measles/data...

@theatlantic.com asked every GOP member of Congress two straightforward questions: Did Russia invade Ukraine? And is Putin a dictator? A few said yes; one responded with an interaction with a chatbot; most didn’t respond at all.

Just heard from a friend who is a true hero veteran. His company was destroyed in 30 days by the VA when they canceled 5 contracts without notice. 23 Americans mostly veterans out of work and a veteran owned small business destroyed. For nothing. They're dismantling the VA not "reforming" it.

Before asserting that something like this is happening because he says he can do it, journalists should ask what the statutory authority is, and if it is unclear or nonexistent, the headline and story should reflect that.

Processing camps and a paramilitary army reminds me of something or other but I can’t quite place it

One more factoid to question the idea that rolling back green regulation will magically spring Germanys economy back to life. Germanys exports of clean tech are now already a larger line of business than its exports to China ever were. Beware the false realists here too.

Popular on X at the moment:

Remarkable assessment by an incoming German chancellor. “for me it is an absolute priority to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible, so that we achieve independence from the US, step by step.” www.dw.com/en/german-el...

This is horrible for the future of American science and innovation and economic wellbeing and all the things Pitt is not a small institution It has nearly 10K grad students It is where Salk discovered the polio vaccine

I want to address a related point to the one I raised in this thread. A couple years ago the Times did a really strong package about the power of SpaceX. Not only is SpaceX. Not only is it now one if not the preemptive orbital delivery company in the world it also has a fleet of ...

the way this shit always goes down w/ the far-right is that somebody popular does or says something genuinely transgressive & winkingly tries to hide behind plausible deniability. then ppl copy it bc they have either been waiting for permission or want to troll. soon it just becomes a thing they do
