Same for Fulbright Language Teacher Assistants (the FLTA program). They've all received notice that their guaranteed stipend is "paused". These are people who some to the US to actually teach classes for universities under an agreement.

This would have stopped my grad school career. Most Fulbrighters don't have a TA or RA the first year and the stipend is not enough to build up any savings at all.

My heart goes out to foreign scholars in the US: The only reason I can do what I do in Ireland is thanks to the generous funding of a fellowship programme. Cannot imagine the nightmare of suddenly losing it

Having once been in an expensive foreign country doing my PhD on a Fulbright, I can say this would have been extremely traumatic. I would not have been able to afford to stay, but I also wouldn’t have had the money to go back to the US. Truly like having the rug pulled out from under you.

Note there have also been issues with outgoing support. The Gilman Scholarship is a federally funded program that supports high achieving low income students studying abroad. Also currently frozen. Students accepted for spring and summer programs are in limbo.

Dad was a Fulbright scholar. I hate to think how he and Mom would have managed in Franco Era Spain if they got cut off like that. (Their host family were lovely but still!)
