It's NSF CAREER season! I've been fortunate to review dozens of CAREER grants and received one in 2022. Here are the most common mistakes I see and actionable tips to strengthen your proposal.

Who is coming to Evolution this week? #Evolution #Evol2025

You’re gonna have to be patient for this one. This little Gastropod veliger larva (sea snail) starts out in its shell, but soon feels brave enough to come out and show us its glorious velum! Such a pretty little babe. 🦑 #plankton

Spent the afternoon yesterday at the Tucson Botanical Gardens with the incomparable Judie Bronstein. @caterpillar-coevo.bsky.social were your ears burning?

Relevant to what's happening at UNC

This one has a working link! Unlike the one I sent…

Join us for an Evolution workshop at the beautiful Mountain Lake Biological Station this July.

I just watched an orangutan tie a knot. You should see it too.

We still have a few spots left for the GRC Ecological & Evolutionary Genomics meeting in Tuscany this summer (July 13-18). Lots of great speakers already lined up, and we'd love to hear from you! www.grc.org/ecological-a...

We’re looking for a new Assistant Meeting Organizer! For more details, please visit www.evolutionmeetings.org/meeting-orga... @sse-evolution.bsky.social @systbiol.bsky.social @asn-amnat.bsky.social

Interested in a PhD connecting sensory ecology and evolutionary genetics? Applications are now open for a project on the Speciation Genomics of Eye Size Variation in Heliconius Butterflies in our lab at LMU Munich: www.evol.bio.lmu.de/research/mer... Please repost!

This is a really great grasshopper I found in Amazonas in Brazil. iNat experts are suggesting something in the genus Eurostacris, but I'm clueless and that doesn't seem to be a common genus of insect. #bugsky #invertefest #nature

A softer sky for today. West Wittering, the beach of my childhood. It felt like we could run forever.

Hearty congratulations to Anurag Agrawal, Amy Angert, and Graham Coop upon their election to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, for their work illuminating the natural world around us. This recognition is very much deserved.

Only 1 more week to apply for this postdoc position on the genomics of parallel climate adaptation in yeast! Link to application portal is in the post below. Please share widely! 🧪🌳🧬🍄

Really excited that our DFG grant on the Speciation Genomics of Eye Size variation in *Heliconius* has been funded :) In the next weeks, I will post an advert for a PhD, but if you know of good students, please suggest they get in touch. Please repost.

"The main criticism which can be made against him is that he is said to rather clumsy at fine work such as dissection; but this is off-set by his capacity for making apparatus." JBS Haldane writes a reference letter for John Maynard Smith in 1951.

Looking out at the North Atlantic from a small seaside cave. Newfoundland, Canada.

In case this is helpful to someone out there: I'm moving to Ball State University this August, and I'll have a support for MS students over the next three years (RAs/TAs) If your lab has talented students graduating this spring, I welcome them to reach out and talk about the opportunities.

One week left for applications! (just a simple questionnaire).

In case you missed it! IU Libraries’ publishing service, Grey Literature, released ”Through the Looking Glass: I. Why Cross-Fertilize?” by biology prof Curt Lively and illustrated by Zoe Dinges. Their monograph examines a longstanding question in evolutionary biology. Curious? 📖: go.iu.edu/8sTs

As much as I love Silene, it saddens me to see it spreading, especially in the Arthur’s Pass area (New Zealand). And I don’t like the Mimulus guttatus at Porter’s Pass either. Equal opportunity dislike for these invasives. But nice photos Phil.
