Today, a broad coalition of scientific professional societies who represent over 92,000 scientists are speaking out against the politicization and demonization of Federally funded science and government scientist jobs. It was an honor to help the Union of Concerned Scientists with this! 🧪🌎

It is worth paying close attention to the new bill "Dangerous Viral Gain of Function Research Moratorium Act" introduced by Senator Roger Marshall. If enacted, it will effectively stop all of virological research, including for vaccines. www.marshall.senate.gov/wp-content/u... 🧵👇

🔬 Hey friends! I'm looking for suggestions for a microscope for my 2 yo (for his 3rd birthday). He recently added "microscope" to his vocabulary and is now say "microscope look inside" so I thought it would be fun to get him a kid microscope. Got any recommendations??

🚨 Are you a researcher who's been asked by your institution not to talk to the public/media about certain topics - esp after Jan 20? Are you a PIO who's had to tell scientists not to talk to the media? Reach out on Signal at mkozlov.01 for a @nature.com story. Your identity will be kept private.

Want to see how much coverage an academic paper is getting? I'm a big fan of the @altmetric.com plugin because sometimes it's hard to find the little Altmetric icon on the article's web page (or they don't have it at all). The plugin can be found here:

I'd like to talk to federal workers with Long COVID and related chronic diseases/disabilities about how they're being impacted by the Trump administration's actions, for a story @thesicktimes.bsky.social. Sources can absolutely be anonymous. Message me on Signal at betsyladyzhets.25.

I always love learning about new plasmid technologies. Researchers from the University of Rochester developed a dual AAV vector system called StitchR that can deliver plasmids containing gene fragments that can be subsequently cut out and assembled into a functional gene.

Measles cases by U.S. state before and after the measles vaccine.

I am worried about: - the future of vaccines - the unchecked spread of bird flu - the suppression of public health voices - the rolling back HIV care access - the assault on science and researchers Today more than ever, I am worried about these things and the threat to our collective health.

For Drug Discovery News, I dove into the science behind the recently FDA approved AAV gene therapy to treat AADC deficiency. Learn more and hear from two gene therapy experts in the article: https://buff.ly/4hwN4NK #GeneTherapy #AAV #AADCdeficiency

First @asm.org does this bs and now @acs.org

I saw someone share this link earlier. I like using the YYYY-MM-DD format. Why? Because then in my Google Drive, I can have everything sorted reverse chronologically. This wouldn't work if I did MM-DD-YYYY or DD-MM-YYYY. What do you prefer?

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

The Trump Administration's list of censored scientific terms that get NSF grant proposals flagged contains "women” and “female”, but no mention of “men” or “male.” There is “black” and “indigenous” on this list, but no “white.” The only identity not censored is mine. youtu.be/dHXbpj1Z3UU

The overview of AMR that you always wanted (someone else to write) - amazing! Truly brilliant paper with great figures! @lancetmicrobe.bsky.social www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

I was going to respond to the ASM press release after having my coffee, but this is such a better response. ASMs last email was Jan 30 and does not mention taking down IDEAA sites or spotlights on Black, Indigenous, or other underrepresented microbiologists, or anything about DEI. Disappointed.

This is what I expected of you @asm.org. Way to go SICB. mailchi.mp/sicb.org/sic...

It has been brought to my attention that my article has been censored to exclude certain terms: asm.org/Articles/202... web.archive.org/web/20250114... #MicroSky

According to a senior CDC official, some of the pages that were removed on Friday have been reinstated due to backlash from the scientific community and the public. Keep speaking up, it matters!

Ok this is not ok. ASM actively sought out BMA and its members for Juneteenth and Black History month content for the last 4 years. Actively asked for black labor and then takes it down?! @asm.org this is unacceptable. You should be standing up for marginalized microbiologists not erasing them.

Make the government make you take down articles @asm.org Don’t do it in advance as a precaution because of loss if funding or whatever. Hell, I would’ve paid way higher membership dues if I knew it would help you take a stand and if you gave us that choice vs whatever this is. Now, not so much

I’m on one of ASMs IDEAA committees and we have received 0 communication from ASM staff on why this is happening. I had to find out via social media. Extremely disappointing.

Hey @asm.org - this is unacceptable.

If you're a journalist downloading CDC data today, please consider filling out this form so we have a centralized guide to who has what. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

CNN has now confirmed this. www.cnn.com/2025/01/24/h...

One of my friends has a grant from the #FDA to look at disparities in clinical trial research and just submitted a manuscript with the findings. She was told today by the collaborators from the #FDA to rescind it. #Censorhip has started, we are living in authoritarian government.

More from inside NIH: Per a source with knowledge, for all internal research (of which there is like $10 billion worth or so), ALL purchasing shut down as of yesterday. That means gloves, reagents, anything involved with lab work, which means a lot of that work will stop.

For any of my archeology/med history friends: @asm.org is offering a grant to come explore their archives. asm.org/Membership/C...

“The reason we focus on photosynthesis is because we want to try to improve crop production without added inputs and without needing more land,” @kmeacham-hensold.bsky.social in a recent interview with @jtsangwrites.bsky.social for Advanced Science News. Read the full article here: bit.ly/3WsKbEW

“The nation is sick. Trouble is in the land; confusion all around… But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.” ~ MLK, 03 April 1968 Wishing you a day of reflection and peace as we remember Martin Luther King, Jr. Photo, 08 May 2019

I got to cover a super cool study for Advanced Science News on a way to boost potato crop yields amidst rising temperatures. In this work, the team went through field trials of their engineered potato over several years to see the effects of their new potato on crop yield. https://buff.ly/42ia3Ya

Writing lecture slides on 'evolution of AMR' - what are your favourite experimental evolution papers? Bonus points if not E. coli. #microsky

Good to see another option to treat antimicrobial resistant infections... but these antibiotics, like all antibiotics, must be used cautiously. For Drug Discovery News, I cover the recent FDA approval of Orlynvah to treat uncomplicated UTIs.

In grad school, I did too many western blots against membrane proteins and I never wanted to think of them again. Now a decade later, I got over it & was super excited to dig into the challenges of generating membrane protein antibodies for @biocompare.bsky.social

I wrote this blog post for The Microbial Menagerie back when my son was about six months old. I had gotten him a bunch of science baby books, including Goodnight Lab which we read almost every night. 🧵

I got to cover a super cool @igemhq.bsky.social project for Drug Discovery News... and what is even more astonishing is that they did this work in 3 months and got a paper out of it. They engineered a bacteria to sense gut inflammation and produce nanobodies as a result.

🐝 I had a lot of fun talking to bee researchers for this story in Advanced Science News. In this article, I covered a recent publication that studied how honey bees, used for crop pollination, compete with wild bees for resources.

ASU is searching for a new director for our biocollections! If you are an associate or full professor (or know one) and are interested in curating a huge collection of Sonoran desert (and other places) organisms, give us a look! apply.interfolio.com/159166

So grateful for this wonderful piece about our work getting featured on the cover of MIT News! Why do most bounce right back from infection while others become debilitatingly ill? Why do infection associated chronic illnesses disproportionately impact women? www.technologyreview.com/2024/02/28/1...
