We can acknowledge that things are bad without saying that these are the worst of all times. Because they aren’t worst of all times. And the end of the world is not a foregone conclusion. In fact, we can reverse course even now.

Watch our new newest podcast where @johnmeadejr.bsky.social and @jenkatesdc.bsky.social breakdown the new executive orders on #foreignaid and biomedical research, and their impact on #globalhealth. Hear how Congress and civil society are pushing back, youtu.be/J1kF9TiNkvU. #GlobalHealth

After the current president leaves the White House, don't allow Democratic leadership to tell you that it can't restore what's been cut w the flip of a wrist. Just as this president reallocates resources as he wishes, so can the next one ― if she or he DECIDES to. And never forget: It is a choice.

Wonderful interview w/ Chris Beyrer & my former writer Tim Murphy about what to expect at CROI 2025. If I was still leading coverage at TheBody, this is PRECISELY the news I'd be putting forward. Thank you for your vision/leadership, @rickguasco.bsky.social & @posaware.bsky.social.

HIV criminalization laws are still on the books in 37 states. These laws are outdated, stigmatizing, racist, and need to change! #HIVIsNotACrime #HIVSky

Are Religious “Freedom” Laws Meant to Kill Us? When I wrote and published this in 2023, many of my peers accused me of fear mongering. Now that we are at this point, I'd like to caution you all that things can in fact get worse. www.thebody.com/article/reli...

I'm in Nigeria at the moment ― headed back to the US ― and would like to remind y'all to avoid people who love you because you're African but hate you because you're Black. They'll colonize your mind if you're not careful.

I wonder how Tim Scott feels about being one of "the good ones." Useful until he's not and discarded with the rubbish that prostrated itself before supremacy.

As much as I appreciate that the lack of diversity in legacy media has reached mainstream conversation, I wish folks weren't so late to this reality. The elitism, gatekeeping and dedication to myopia have been a problem. Too many ppl would rather see a thing die with them than thrive without them.

I’m so tired of ppl picking on our most vulnerable populations because they can’t have enough representation to speak out for themselves. Trans people exist and are not the enemy. Instead you can focus on actual perpetrators of sexual assault, some of whom are in gov…

Many Medicaid recipients do not know they receive it because Medicaid is called different things in different states. The public narrative of Medicaid focuses on a distant other, but 40% of US children and 60% of nursing home residents receive Medicaid. Just SOME of the names by state are below:

Lately, I've been reflecting on the late John Lewis and how our congressional circumstances might differ if he were alive. However, I also had to look up and remind myself that he did leave behind some pretty clear marching orders:

People are dying everyday b/c of the US' sudden global health funding freeze. People are dying from many illnesses including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, & even the flu. The suddenness of this order is a reminder that it did not have to be this way. This was a choice. And it is up to us to do better.

Just finished my 5th year at Danzainfiera, where I taught Horton technique to a class of 130 dancers. The festival even featured me in its promotions Biggest lesson from me: If it's not working, try something else ― even if it doesn't make sense. 🖤 Now I'm off to Abuja to work w @gbgmc.bsky.social

"If we follow the definition of sex proposed in the executive order, all of us are female, bc at conception, we develop as females until androgens kick in to make some of us develop as males." Instead of getting myopic, @jncherabiemd.bsky.social says focus on gender-neutral language & pronouns.

The people of Kenya contributed key evidence that PrEP prevents HIV. In Kenya last week I saw beloved clinics like DREAMS, North Star, etc closed. The remaining clinics’ PrEP supplies expire in June without a plan for new shipments. We have come too far to not prioritize PrEP access! #PEPFAR #USAID

In 2023, I interviewed @ammahstarr.bsky.social MD & Perry Halkitis, PhD about encouraging people w HIV to get vaccinated & boosted: www.thebodypro.com/article/futu... The flu has decimated generations of people & its essential that we vaccinate everyone ― ESP people w compromised immune systems.

Yesterday, a doctor tried to deny me a yellow fever vaccine after I shared my HIV status w her. I got the shot after arguing for 40 minutes. But imagine how much harder it would have been if I was trans. Or if I didn't have scientific data to prove zero contraindications for giving me the shot.

If you work at the Kennedy Center, or at an arts org grappling with how to respond to the new NEA guidelines, or have anything else to share about how Trump’s takeover of the arts is affecting you, get in touch: [email protected] or marinafang.72 on Signal

This is the new banner on HIV prevention webpages. This data is based off years of the highest quality evidence. To say this “this page does not reflect biological reality” because it includes trans people is propaganda from the people who know nothing about biology nor how to properly define sex.

For Valentines Day 2023, I brought @kenyonfarrow.bsky.social back to TheBody to write about having compassion for sex workers on gay dating apps: www.thebody.com/article/are-... In this time of chaos, I think it's time to remember that the real enemy is poverty & to focus on eliminating it.

I say this as a person who serves on the editorial board of a couple peer reviewed journals, after reviewing this EO on Making America Healthy Again, it is gaslighting and trying to rewrite narratives with faulty “science”. The science is there, it’s being interpreted wrong…

On Dr. Janet Mitchell's shoulders, I stand. Know her name. At the height of the HIV epidemic in the 80s & 90s, she provided care to Black & Latina women and pregnant people with substance use disorders, a group largely ignored, as the focus was on gay white men. www.thebody.com/hiv/janet-mi...

I voted based on each candidate's response to containing HIV & AIDS. The person I voted for lost & now Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has been confirmed to lead the HHS. I fear these cuts to health funding are only the start. For now, I'm focusing on protecting trans people. qburgh.com/a-reminder-o...

Dr. Janet Mitchell is an HIV Hero! www.thebody.com/hiv/janet-mi... I commissioned & edited this article by Tim Murphy last Aug after he wrote about ACTG 076―which Mitchell helped lead―a study showing that people w HIV could give birth to babies w/o transmitting the virus. Happy Black History Month!

This is the new normal. Now what do we do? Allow yourself to feel dismayed. And when you are ready, start creating an action plan. Things are not going to go back to "how they used to be." So lets reference lessons/strategies we used to survive the late 90s & fit them to this moment.

#Maynard200 alum Juan Michael Porter II @juanmichaelii.bsky.social for @pozmagazine.bsky.social: study on HIV prevention "would have been a stark turnaround from the NIH’s history of awarding disproportionately more NIH Research Projects to white scientists over Black scientists." ow.ly/hP2F50UW5cc

With uncertainty over the future of Ryan White HIV funding, here's what is known. It started w an alarming memo that was sent out to Cleveland-based #HIV providers. Thank you @jncherabiemd.bsky.social for explaining that―come what may―there are alternatives. thebuckeyeflame.com/2025/02/11/u...

2.5 years ago, I interviewed @pulitzerprizes.bsky.social winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks about her writing process for TDF Stages. Her words of wisdom continue to help me navigate my struggles. I share them w you now: go to the stinky places. Esp if they scare you. www.tdf.org/on-stage/tdf...

Navigating Trump's executive orders & exemptions is difficult for HIV orgs b/c many administrators: 1. Preemptively follow the order 2. Hold off on following the exemptions 3. Listen for & comply w Trump's informal comments rather than the exemptions themselves. It's a power imbalance.

Apparently today is the Super Bowl. I hope that you all are enjoying it. I'm going to go back to reading about how others are fighting to maintain care to ARVs to people across Africa and SE Asia now that PEPFAR has been all but neutered.

From the brilliant @juanmichaelii.bsky.social www.poz.com/article/hiv-...

In my @pozmagazine.bsky.social debut, I wrote about how NIH shortchanged its funding for the largest study on Black gay men in the US even before Trump took office. HPTN 096 could have been a game changer in #HIV prevention. Only NIH knows what will happen next. www.poz.com/article/hiv-...

In another sick turn of events, #Colorado is facing a $1B shortfall so they are proposing to cut ALL substance use services as well as the All-Payor Claims Database! Not the Dept of Corrections. Not agriculture. Vital health information & services in the midst of an ongoing #overdose epidemic (1/2)

Be wary of people who love [exoticize] you because you're African but hate you because you're Black.

There is no equality without equity.

I trained in the Middle East, many countries there reported zero HIV infections because “they didn’t have homosexuals”. We have entered that phase now in the US…. #HIVSky #IDSky

The Trump administration’s order to freeze U.S. foreign aid continues to disrupt global health efforts—including #HIV programs—despite a court order and a partial waiver on the freeze. positivelyaware.com/concern-and-disruption-continue
