One for teachers / educators... Humanimal Trust's Creative Awards are back. They're inviting over-7s (in multiple categories) to enter a piece of visual art or written work that captures the incredible similarities between humans and animals. Info here: www.humanimaltrust.org.uk/creative-awa...

You should order When the Earth Was Green not just for my lush words, but for amazing, original paleoart by the phenomenal @korybing.bsky.social! These pieces are a few of my favorites in the book. us.macmillan.com/books/978125...

When the Earth Was Green has something for everyone. Humid coal swamps full of immense arthropods. Hungry, hungry dinosaurs. Sabercats rolling in catnip. Prehistoric bats sipping from flowers. Early monkeys rafting across the sea. Tooting mastodons. And so much more. 🌱

15 degree swing in 24 hours. A *LOT* of Queen wasps waking from slumber. G'morning to each of 'em.

Back from @niscifest.bsky.social (where events continue this week). Great fun! Lots of shows, lorra zoology chat. A privilege. A big highlight was on-staging with @flygirlnhm.bsky.social and hearing about Buster Gonad cricket genitalia among many other topics of important educational filth.

Tonight. For one night only (till next time) I’m with @juleshoward.bsky.social on stage at the @niscifest.bsky.social talking about the Sex Lives of Insects Did you know some spp of earwigs have a spare penis in case one breaks? #NISF2025 nisciencefestival.com/events/late-...

This non-fic epic extravaganza, five years in the making, stomps into bookshops today. Such amazing illustrations and scene constructions by Gavin Scott! Can't wait for young audiences to be totally wowed and, I hope, inspired. Let me know if you spot it in the wild! Have a MEGA day x

If you haven’t read The Last Days of the Dinosaurs yet, now’s the perfect time before When the Earth Was Green comes out on February 25th! Both are narratives of prehistoric life that explore how ancient happenstance shaped the world we know today. 🌱 us.macmillan.com/author/riley...

Hi everyone -- if you enjoyed #TetZooCon, here's a reminder that its descendant - #DinoCon - kicks off this August in Exeter, UK, and that tickets GO LIVE THIS FRIDAY. It's shaping up to be a great event. Be sure to check out the website here.... www.dinocon.co.uk

Out on Thursday!

A tiny Trissolcus parasitoid wasp lurks among a clutch of stink bug eggs. Mindo, Ecuador.

Ssshhh... starting to talk about … MEGA! Out next Thurs (13th). Some of you know how long I’ve been working on this BIG project, which began 5 years ago. It’s a non-fic for 7-11yrs, which details the lives of Earth’s largest animals and celebrates the value they bring to ecosystems...

MEDIA REQUEST: Looking to speak with some historians of science, ideally but not necessarily historians of ocean science. DMs open, or whysharksmatter at gmail

"The successful parent-rearing of these froglets is a powerful symbol of hope for the species [and] highlights what can be achieved when conservationists work together." <---- positive news! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I hear you, wren. Yes, robin. Yes, song thrush. Bit more please, dunnock.

Enjoyed 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' enormously, despite the continued lack of GG rubbing in the franchise.

Worrying…. “We are reducing the environmental requirements placed on developers when they pay into a nature restoration fund... they can focus on getting things built and stop worrying about the bats and the newts," Chancellor Rachel Reeves www.bigissue.com/news/politic...

Putting the final touches to my Crick biography, it will go off for copy-editing at the end of this week. Over three years in someone else's head is enough. It will be out in October/November this year. 150k of text, 40k of notes. It will be a wrist-sprainer, but will look lovely I promise.

This is officially my horizontally longest image to date, depicting some of the earliest complex animals on the planet from 565 to 505 million years ago and how they changed over time. Thank you to @egmitchell.bsky.social and Steve Pates for trusting me with this gargantuan task! #Art #SciArt

This has been a fascinating case to watch from afar... Do elephants legally deserve the same rights as people? Today Colorado's Supreme Court decided 6-0 that they did not... "no matter how cognitively, psychologically, or socially sophisticated they may be..." www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

"As you increase fertilisers, pollinator numbers decrease – that’s the direct link that to our knowledge has never been shown... The knock-on effect goes right up the food chain..." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Do I know any Japanese fungi experts, I wonder? Do you? (If so, please point me to them. Thanks!).

Signs of spring that rarely feature in nature-writing: molehills.

Schools! Young science-lovers! The 'Young Science Writer Award' launches Friday. Open to students aged 14-16 from state-funded, non-selective schools (UK). Was involved in this last year (as a judge). Really great, positive initiative by @absw.bsky.social. Details here: www.absw.org.uk/pages/YSWA

This year sees the launch of Moving Mountains in paperback! Last year @rgsibg.bsky.social magazine listed it in their BEST NATURE BOOKS of 2024, with @sophieyeo.bsky.social @hedgehoghugh.bsky.social @tomheap.bsky.social @juleshoward.bsky.social p/back out 6 March geographical.co.uk/culture/this...

"You can step back in time and get an idea of what it would have been like, these massive creatures just roaming around, going about their own business..." <- UK's longest dino trackway unearthed. Really special! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
